A good question.

And the word 'spirit' does need a clear definition, does it not?

When some people reference 'spirit' they are actually talking about

something else than the spirit.

Spirit to me follows what EC says. It's the energy field that causes

us to be alive (on this plane and other planes) and vitalizes the

body.

Now when someone 'sees a spirit' they are noticing 'it' with eyes

(visual sensing) other than normal physical eyes and the normal

paying of attention.

A simple method of noticing is with the Hakalau that I've taught for

many years.

Nope. Not with the burning of sage.

In fact I do not burn sage. See last post for my reasons.

I have seen 'energy' that seems very intelligent and externally

aware, and when put into a place where it is obviously noticed by us,

it gets the hell out of there.

It literally runs (scoots/flys/moves) like a alley cat that doesn't

want to be noticed.

Some neat stories if anyone is interested.

Sage burning is NOT for spirits, EVER, but for something else.

Anyone want to give a reason (s)?

It's back to the orginal poster's question.

I went to a little lecture before Christmas by an essential oils expert :David Crow"Replanting the Global Garden: What our World Could be When Cared for as a Garden of Medicine."David Crow is an acupuncturist and herbalist with twenty-five years experience. He is the author of "In Search of the Medicine Buddha," a book about his studies of Tibetan and Ayurvedic medicine in the Himalayas. He is the founder of Floracopeia, which supports ecologically sustainable agriculture through the production of essential oils and aromatic treasures. It was really interesting  (I used to always po-po aroma therapy ). Supposedly, only 20% of plants produce essential oils. It seems that the oils are an anti-microbial strategy -- of a more highly developed plant system. I bought a little vile of White Sage -- and just love it.He had some of these little electric oil defusers -- got one for my sister. (who is so scent-sitive )  It diffuses the oil into the air in a really fine mist. And, the contraption has a little light show going on inside.  She is in heaven!Helen On Jan 6, 2009, at 3:28 AM, Rusty wrote:I have heard that burning other plants or resins are more efficaciousfor cleansing Clary sage [salvia sclarea] also has great benefits -  for easing depression and nervous burn-out, which clears the mental/spiritual  space.http://www.aromatherapy-essential-oils.org/essentialoil/profile/clarysage/index.htmrusty--
