Guest guest
I saw your question on malas and thought I would answer as they seem to becoming at me quite a bit recently... at least the word mala. I make these bracelets... They were originally (and still are) necklaces worn by Buddhist and Hindu Monks (even Richard Gere wears them). They can be used to relax, meditate, affirm your personal power, or to attract luck, prosperity, or well-being. They are considered prayer beads strands or power bead strands and have been used in meditation by Buddhists and Hindus for centruies. Usually they come in 27 - 54 - or 108 bead lengths. They have crossed ver into popular culture--part fad, part good-luck charm. But they are more than just a fashion statement. Used meditatively, they offer a scenic rest stop on the eight-lane highway of life--the scenery being, that inner landscape of self-reflection. The word Mala is Sanskrit for garland of flowers, and, as the word suggests, a long mala may be worn around theneck in the same way you would wear such a garland. But with a religious mala, each " flower " is a bead; each bead, a mantra or prayer. When you pray with a mala, you bring mind, heart, body into the stillness of contemplation. You need not be a Buddhist to bring malas into your life. Whatever your spiritual practice, you can engage a mala to help you create and maintain a state of quiet reflection--a cloister of the mind-- where stress, negative emotions, and the noise of the world remain locked outside its gates. I use them when I went to the dentist. He had to keep telling me to hold my mouth open as I was so concentrating on the mala to help me with the pain, I forgot to keep holding my mouth open.... I use them all the time... and have found by just grasping the hanging part of the bracelet, sometimes calms before anger erupts. So I would highly recommend them.... When I make mine, i try to make it fit the person or the use that it will be used for. My two favorites that I wear all the time are sandalwood and tiger's eyes. Since each wood and stone has it owns properties you can mix and match stones to be used for whatever purpose you want to use the bracelets for. Or you can make them just one stone grouping. I have also made ones for the zodiac stones, and for horoscope stones, birth stones, etc. I hope this helps you understand more about Mala Bracelets and dharma beads. Blessings in the NOW and in the FUTURE! Mystic On 18 Oct 2003 at 9:18, @ wrote: >
