Use of LOSEC

There was a recent press item here in the UK about an old

people's home where the manager upped the residents' daily

intake of water and found they were brighter and more alert, stopped

having vertigo, had far fewer falls and were generally healthier and

happier. Not only are these residents usually on a

cocktail of drugs but the homes are generally overheated,

under-oxygenated and the food they eat is often too salty. No wonder

they are dehydrated.

Although

a message about the unfortunate overuse of Losec was posted to the

group here it has not yet apppeared on the list - but i would like to

add the following anyway:

Yes as a

nurse I am appalled by the number of patients who are put on Losec

(Omeprazole). I would say - if a patient is under the care

of a GP and over 60 years old s/he will be on Losec as well

as a Statin drug - routinely - and discouraged from drinking

water as well.

I remember years ago when I worked in ICUs

throughout Melbourne that all ICU patients were routinely put on

Omeprazol - this was in the 80's & 90's - at that time older

patients were put on oral Ranitidine initially but when this stopped

being effective in alleviating the symptoms of heartburn which

could have been resolved by increasing oral water intake then they

were moved over to Losec from which I understand it is very difficult

to withdraw - even if subsequently the water intake is increased

- so it must do permanent damage in some way?

Best,

Jane

Having worked in these places for over 20 years I would say that the state - or whoever decrees such things - wishes to get rid of these dear ones as quickly as possible to reduce the financial cost to the community and government - the attitude of those in power over these dear ones is horrendous - the annual vaccines and the constant medications usually does the trick quickly - very sad
