Those who defend human life over other creatures have this "chosen holier-than thou" concept of ourselves, that we are superior in worth to other animals and I don't believe that distinction can

Those who defend human life over other creatures have this "chosen holier-than thou" concept of ourselves, that we are superior in worth to other animals and I don't believe that distinction can logically be made. What gives us the right to defend human life over animals is the right of self preservation and only our morality, however flawed it may be, which maintains that we are higher in the food chain and therefore have the right, if not the ability to kill those below us in this chain of evolution.

 

Since a foetus can be likened to an animal which at that primitive stage lacks human awareness we have the ability, and the right, to also dispose of a foetus.What is the moral status of the foetus?

 

It must have a soul to justify it's superiority to animals,

because the soul gives a human being full moral status

and superiority to animals.

 

However, what is a soul?

 

Nobody knows.

 

That is because the soul is a non-physical thing and we are all physical things. But, if the soul is a sort of non-physical thing then we can never find it, never adequately define it --

which translates to saying simply that it does not exist.

That We made it up. And because it doesn't exist we can't use it

to confer any special right to life.If it is wrong to kill a foetus, but not immoral to kill human cells, then the distinction is not clear at all because a foetus does not have any more consciousness than a "human" cancer cell.The foetus is mere embryonic cells and genetic material and as such there is no moral relevance to humanity. Religion relies on a "belief structure" based on humans having souls whereas cancer-cells and dogs and cats do not, and considering a foetus supreme and preferential to a mother's life is also polemical and irrational.Continue reading the rest of the topic and comment at
