Soy Bashing

Shouldn’t we be cautious about soy bashing when Southeast Asians have used it for centuries?

Should we be helping the dairy and meat industries with soy bashing without verifying?

Are Melamine tainted, hormone filled and pesticide filled, cholesterol laden animal products the answer?

Shouldn’t we think about and research every article we post here?

Here is my answer to all the soybashing.

Is soy a harmful food? There are articles that claim that soy causes breast cancer, thyroid cancer and other problems. What about the fact that 90% of the soy is genetically modified these days? Should we eat soy products?

Soy is a bean that is rich in protein. Compared to animal protein, soy is better because it contains no cholesterol, no fat, and does contain fibre.

One of the reasons that cancer has become an epidemic is because we are eating too much protein. Protein is a food for growth. If we take milk or meat or soy in large quantities when we are no longer growing, this will translate into obesity and other growths like cancers and tumours. Our problem today is not soy, but the protein addiction.

Genetically modified foods have been proved harmful in lab animals. Not just soy, but corn, and various other vegetables these days are genetically modified. It’s best to choose organic non-GM foods.

Eating meat or dairy is an indirect way of eating soy, especially GM soy. Large amounts of soy are fed to farm animals to make them grow fast. So whether you choose tofu and soy milk or dairy and meat, if you consume these in large quantities you are likely to suffer cancer, diabetes, heart disease and hypertension. The only way to prevent these diseases is to eat what nature intended us to – a variety of vegan fresh whole foods.

A little soy will not cause harm.

So it appears to me that unless we know the safe levels we should treat as an unsafe food unless only taken occasionally.Regards,Sunil K. Soy should not replace meat and dairy but should be had for taste and variety just as you would use any other lentil or bean. Variety is the key to good health.

Dear Nanditaji,

More than 90% of soy from US is Genetically Modified. So we also need to be clear which SOY we are talking about. Moreover, WE also do not have a system in India for labelling GM soy, which is in all probability already there in some of the imported Soy products we feed ourselves and our children with. So much for "good health"

Dear Sunil, Shridhar and others,

Just to make it clear, India produces a lot of soy and at the moment it is not GM. It could be in the future. But more importantly, if you are eating any animal products including milk you are getting a lot more soy indirectly than any human being could eat. Be aware that much of the anti soy propaganda comes from the meat and dairy industry and is not true. If you are so scared about GM you should be writing about brinjals which in this country are actually GM. It does not make sense to write your beliefs in such a forum. If you write it should be researched, not hearsay.
