In many bi polar- schitzo conditions the Brain hormone GABA is is short supply so it's function of slowing down and cooling out the overly busy brain is impaired. GABA cannot cross the Blood Brain Barrier, so supplements don't work. However, Dr. Abram Hoffer has been using a substitute for GABA for years that is inexpensive and turns the same switches on the brain cells as the neurotransmitter GABA and it does cross the BBB. Search < " Dr. Abram Hoffer " >, sub search <bipolar> and you'll find lots of info. Hoffer's currently using this orthomolecular approach for curing some cancers but he still has mood swing patients. Dr. Hoffer is in his eighties now so it's a closed practice and he's not taking on more patients. | - The protocol for all bipolar stuff is simple: 500 mg of synthetic niacin, vit. B-3. It's called niacinimide. -| The real stuff, niacin, works also but at this high dosage causes uncomfortable flushing. The flushing effect of niacin can be counteracted with inositol, B-8 but it gets more expensive than just using niacinimide. I know several of Hoffer's patients that swear by the protocol but I suggest you do your own searches before you try anything. rusty - " shannahickle " <shannahickle <acupuncture > Friday, June 25, 2004 11:13 PM acupuncture Re: Mental disorders > Hi Matthew > > Absolutely, yes!! Guest guest
Hi Shanna, Thank you for your recommendations. I will definitely check them out in the near future and see how they compare with the books in Chinese. The books that I have encountered from Mainland China contain mostly herbal prescriptions in addition to OM theory but does not provide much information in terms of acupuncture points prescription. Treating mental disorders with acupuncture has a lot of potentials for success given my past experiences. Hopefully we will see more journals and books on this subject as this subject continues to gather the attention it deserves. Thank you once again. :=) Ming shannahickle <shannahickle wrote: Hi Ming Blue Poppy has published a wonderful text called " Chinese Medical Psychiatry " by Bob Flaws and James Lake, MD. Depression and Bi Polar illness are both covered in pretty good detail with acupuncture suggestions and herbal prescriptions. I have found this Blue Poppy series to be quite informative and helpful in the clinic. They also have texts on treating diabetes, renal diseases and a wonderful general text on modern Western Medical diseases. I own them all and recommend them highly.
