Guest guest
Hi, http://www.thaigem.com/dis_topaz.php This link will show you what the blue topaz usually looks like. It is a heat treated regular white topaz. The item in your picture looks more like a black tourmaline or obsidian. Perhaps it fell into the wrong bin at the shop. Incidentally, I have bought items from these folks, including some lovely faceted moldavite and they seem reliable. Your order does have to be big enough to make the $15.00 Fedex charge worthwhile. Guest guest
Thank you, If what I have isn't blue topaz (and I agree, I have only seen it gem-quality like the site you provided), then the place I bought it from has misrepresented it entirely--each of the stones in the bin were the same color, and it was 3/4 full. I also agree with you, that it looks just like my schorl (black tourmaline). It even has the same pock-marks. Sad, that a dealer would do that. I suppose, that I should have known better, having seen the gem quality blue topaz many times over the years. I should also have been more skeptical, due to the fact that they obviously don't know the difference between ametrine and amethyst. I bought a piece of each a few months back, only to get home and find that both were ametrine. I realize that it is a fairly easy mistake to make, but in clear light, it was obvious. Thanks again, though I was really hoping that maybe I was wrong too! I've seen Thai Gem advertise on eBay, they do have some lovely pieces. Guest guest
Here's a thought - does the store owner work in the store or leave the running of it to people who probably wouldn't know or wouldn't care? In other words, could utter carelessness/slack be the reason that the items in the bin don't match the labels? There was a new age store I use to frequent. Nice owner and nice store, but when health problems kicked in, we'd find blue lace agate in the garnet bin :-( --Anna --- HaliteSprite <HaliteSprite wrote: > Thank you, > > If what I have isn't blue topaz (and I agree, I have only seen > it gem-quality like the site you provided), then the place I > bought it from has misrepresented it entirely--each of the > stones in the bin were the same color, and it was 3/4 full. Guest guest
LOL, well at least there is a big difference between the two--though if someone who knew nothing about either stone came along. . .they might be in the same boat as I. I figured, that like their emerald and rubies, the blue topaz was not light blue, simply because it wasn't gem quality. . .that there was some processing it would have gone through to make it nice (yes, I know, that doesn't make sense, LOL). Their rubies are rough--so they don't look like what you'd see in jewlery, their emeralds are dark and solid green with black--also not what emeralds generally look like in jewelry. . .who knows, maybe I got " taken " on all three, LOL. I'll rescan the ruby and emerald and send them later. (The ruby looks like reddish lepidolite.) The store I go to is a chain, it's an occult shop, rather than a rock shop--there aren't any rock shops here that I can find! Thanks for everyone's help!
