Dear Dennis,

How are you today?

As the director of a nonprofit organization that researches health issues, I

look into all sorts of subjects, from the hazards of water fluoridation to the

anti-cancer benefits of tomatoes.

Last year when I was tutoring at Happy Valley, I noticed that many of the

kids were chewing gum that contained the artificial sweetener aspartame. So I

did

some research.

I found out that aspartame is a molecule composed of three components:

aspartic acid, phenylalanine, and methanol. Once ingested and warmed by the

body,

aspartame begins to change. At 86 degrees Fahrenheit, the methanol in aspartame

converts to formaldehyde.

Formaldehyde is an Environmental Defense Fund recognized carcinogen, a

suspected gastrointestinal or liver toxicant, immunotoxicant, neurotoxicant,

reproductive toxicant, respiratory toxicant, and skin or sense organ toxicant.

Formaldehyde is " more hazardous than most chemicals in 5 out of 12 ranking

systems. "

It appears on at least 8 federal regulatory lists and is ranked as " one of

the most hazardous compounds (worst 10%) to ecosystems and human health. "

Aspartame is found in over 5,000 products in the U.S., notably diet drinks,

candy, and sugar-free gums. American girls chew sugar-free gum largely to keep

from gaining weight, but it turns out that aspartame makes the body crave

carbohydrates (due to serotonin depletion), so people who chew

aspartame-containing gum are more likely to gain weight than lose it.

Further, formaldehyde stores in fat cells, particularly on the hips and

thighs. Since NutraSweet and Equal and the other artificial sweeteners that

contain

aspartame have hit the market, obesity has become a national epidemic,

leading one researcher to remark, " If you want to be fat, Diet Coke is where

it's

at. " (http://www.dorway.com/mpflyer.txt and

http://aspartamekills.com/warning.pdf)

But weight gain is not the only common symptom of aspartame consumption.

Ingesting aspartame can result in any of 92 documented adverse symptoms, from

chronic fatigue to depression to headaches to anxiety to concentration

difficulties to seizures to blindness to coma to death.

The FDA's approval of aspartame, produced by the chemical company Monsanto,

is--how can I say this politely?--somewhat tainted.

James S. Turner, author of " The Chemical Feast: The Nader Report on the Food

and Drug Administration, " and partner in the 29-year-old Washington, D.C.

consumer-interest law firm Swankin and Turner, gives us the full story in his

article, " The Aspartame/NutraSweet Fiasco "

I have talked personally with many of the kids at school about the

unscientific nature of the FDA approval of aspartame, as well as the hazards of

the

substance. The kids listen with great interest and then buy another Diet Coke or

take out another stick of Orbit. " It tastes good, " they say.

Last year I brought to school a gum called Peelu that is sweetened with a

harmless natural sweetener called sorbitol. The kids liked it, and about 25 of

them (95% of the kids that tried it) signed a petition saying that they thought

it should be sold at the student store as an alternative to the current gums

containing aspartame.

I have talked about this petition to students associated with the year-2003/4

student store, but they feel that the price of Peelu gum is too high. " No one

will buy it, " they say. This may well be the case.

I spoke with one of the students responsible for student store purchases

about the possibility of making Happy Valley a showcase for a Peelu (or other)

natural gum in exchange for the gum company's giving the school a significant or

even total price break on the gum.

Peelu or some other natural gum company could work in tandem with the school

administration to make Happy Valley school an " aspartame-free zone, " thus

helping kids to stay healthy, concentrate better on studies, and keep their

bodies

in shape. An aspartame-free Happy Valley School, with all of its smiling and

happy kids, would be a major advertising coup for any company.

Today there are over 4,000 web sites dedicated to uncovering the hazards of

aspartame. There are scores of books on the dangers of aspartame. (See

especially Janet Hull's " Sweet Poison: How The World's Most Popular Artificial

Sweetener Is Killing Us. " )

Unfortunately, these kinds of facts don't have the power to convince kids

that the hazards of aspartame are real. Facts can't compete with taste.

Perhaps the Happy Valley administration can become the straw that mends the

camel's back. Perhaps there is someone at the school who would be interested in

stepping in and giving the kids a helping hand into the sweet and happy

valley of health.

Hate to rain on your parade... but sorbitol is not

user friendly. It is so toxic that it cannot even be

used as a preservative in tubes of blood. When they

tried to so use it, it immediaately broke down the

bllod cells. It, along with benzoates is amongst the

most toxic of prservatives in use today.

A preservative would not preserve anything if it

didn't kill everything that has life or metabolism in

it. Sorbitol stimulates autoimmune response against

the bodies own tissues. When you read the list of

ingredients on a product if anything listed has

Any suggestions for what to use in place of Aspartame without resorting to

sugar? There are some things that just need sweetening. So far, where I live

all artificially sweetened products appear to contain Aspartame.

Aspartame (was Re: Adrenal failure)

Hello all,

Aspartame can most certainly cause weight gain and/or stop weight loss.

Apparently it messes with the pancreas in some way... which is really

bad for healthy folks but even worse for someone with diabetes.

Aspartame is a dangerous poison and causes many, many health problems

besides weight.

I use honey, turbinado (raw, unrefined sugar) and the herb stevia can

also be used as it is sweeter than sugar.

Thanks Michelle :) Honey, I know, though it doesn't quite 'go' with

everything. Stevia, I will look for. I have heard quite a bit about it. Not

sure of its availability here. Now turbinado, or unrefined sugar. I know I'm

going to sound uneducated, but isn't that brown sugar? What's the

difference?

So far, where I live all artificially sweetened products appear to

contain Aspartame.

Hi Lorain,

A quick search on ebay found several folks selling Stevia seeds and

plant starts. I'm sure there are plenty of website that offer it too. I

think I'm going to look for a good source as well - throw them out there

with the mints and they should be fine.

Here are a few links to info for growing your own...

I'm sure it would grow on a windowsill like other herbs will... anyone

have experience doing that? I have a few friends who grow it but it's

all outdoors. Course, you could always plant alot of it to make sure

you would have enough for the winter. Just dry it after harvest and

keep till you need it.

Hope this helps,

Mouse

ps. Yes, agave is natural... same plant that tequila is made from.

You're welcome. Turbinado is raw sugar that has not been refined and it

does have a light brown color. But, Brown Sugar is processed the same

as white sugar.

On the same subject (more or less), how much do you know about saccharin?

I want to thank you so much for all the information you've been passing

along. You've been so helpful :)

Sure!

Stevia is GREAT and you can even grow it yourself, as long as you don't

mind the look of it in your food. It is a herb so dried and chopped, it

kinda looks like parsley! That doesn't bother me at all but is does some

folks. If you prefer sweetener that looks more like sugar, you can buy

Thanks Tint, I appreciate that.

I don't know as much about saccharin as aspartame but it is just as

bad. What I do know is that my mother drank alot of Tab back in the day

and she died of cancer. An uncle by marriage was fond of it in his ice

tea and he recently was diagnosed with a cancer as well. I never

understood why anyone would use that stuff 'cos it tastes like poo if

you ask me...

Peace,

I didn't know Tab was still out. I can't think why people drank it.... it

was horrible, but that's just my opinion :) Is Tab still sold in the USA?

Unfortunately...yes...Tab is still sold here in the USA. My dad

drank it when I was little. It tasted horrible then...and still does

today! (My opinion.) I have tried so hard to drink diet soda but I

can't do it. I've tried all the kinds and maybe it's just because of

the toxic ingredients. I've heard that some of the ingredients in

diet soda actually increases your appetite!

Hi Diane,

Yes I have heard too that diet soda does increase appetite but I think it's

by a similar process that sugar, honey, or anything else sweet does.

I had no idea they still had Tab in the US! My mother used to drink that

too when I was a kid, and it was a major " treat " to get some though I

probably wouldn't like it now.

I was actually allowed only diet pop as a kid but didn't even have that

often.which is probably a good thing.

Take care,

To me, Tab tastes awful. In fact, I have developed a distaste for all diet

sodas. The taste is simply off. But that might be because I'm drinking more

water and thus craving more water. Now orange juice is something you an

offer me anytime :)

I do believe that if people were encouraged to drink natural products like

water or orange juice, there wouldn't be as much of a fight over the

possibility of putting harmful chemicals into our body.
