SciDev.Net marks Human Rights Day with a series of articles on the right to science

In a series of articles published today, SciDev.Net draws attention to the right to " share in scientific advancement and its benefits " , which is included in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted by the UN General Assembly 60 years ago.

 

In her opinion article, Jessica Wyndham, director of the Article 15 Project of the Science and Human Rights Program at the American Association for the Advancement of Science, says this right has been neglected.

 

Wyndham calls on all scientists to uphold the right to science and use their influential voices to demand that governments take action — for example, by redressing the funding imbalance for neglected diseases, disseminating inexpensive technologies, promoting international scientific cooperation and cultivating a free and well-resourced scientific community.

 

Her call is echoed by Leonard Rubenstein and Mona Younis who, writing in Science, outline ways in which scientists can join the global effort to realise human rights.

 

But, as argued by SciDev.Net director, David Dickson, such efforts must be balanced with other key issues, including the protection of intellectual property rights, human morality and environmental sustainability.
