Guest guest
Evening Vache, >>have magnesium oxide. Yes, they do! Food grade chelated at $0.35 a >pound! (Hmm, now I wonder what shipping will run me.) Plus from the >site I was able to better get a grip on how much to actually >suppliment the horses with. So that would be good for the horses and maybe chickens. How about humans? Food Grade is Food Grade, is it not? >Wayne, why do you want to feed the chickens flax? Are they caged? >Do they get to free feed outside on bugs & grasses at all? They are caged but they do get to graze on grass, bugs, ect. But not all the time. The foxes and coyotes will dine on chickens. Unless they have an attendant, we do not let them out. The reason I want to add flaxseed to the diet of the chickens it to make " Omega 3 Enriched Eggs " . This is not exactly new as many large commercial producers are doing it. If you want to see more about this use this search string in Google. eggs + enhanced + Omega3 and you will find a number of articles. > LOL, & for some reason I thought you lived in a city. What every made you think that? Do I sound like a city slicker to you? <grin> Actually I am country boy from way back. Now I liver about 15 miles from downtown Jackson. Possibly my small garden made you think that. > What is your worming protocol for them? I am not the " chief chicken grower " . A friend about 1.3 miles away takes care of the chickens. They are actually his chickens. But for various produce and other favors, he furnishes me eggs. I will ask him about the worming of the chickens. Any suggestions for us? Guest guest
Wayne, In general I would recommend most any product from the VitaRoyal.com site. Yes, food grade magnesium oxide is good for humans & chickens too. So then, are the chickens in a " chicken tractor " for grazing? Yes, I am well aware of the flax added by commercial chicken growers. Are you aware that some of them use left over flax seed that has already been pressed for its oil, so basically what they end up with is a high protein meal for feeding. (Well, high protein compared to the average commercial bagged horse feed.) So much for the Omega 3 oils, but they can legally say the chickens have been fed flax. If the enriched egg is your goal by all means feed FAR more than what I previously suggested. I still would suggest freshly ground, at times when they would be prone to immediately eating it. A lot of stuff goes through chickens under utilized, thus the practice of feeding chicken manure to cows, etc. They mix the chicken manure in to make a " new " processed feed to then be feed to stock. As for the worming protocol, I primarily just know of Piperzien (sp) & diatomaceous earth. Of course do not use DE meant for use in swimming pools. The local feed store should carry 50# sacks of flax seed. If not ask them to order it in. I am paying $20-$25 per 50# sack. Cheers, Vache
