Guest guest
Hello all, I am new to the list. I wanted to ask about vitamin interactions, and if there is a better way to take what I am taking. First, let me set the stage. I am female in my 40's and have early onset Parkinsons. I am very active, and eat right. For the past year, I have been following fairly closely, but with slight modification, " The Brain Wellness Plan " by Jay Lombard (a board certified neurologist). My supplementation consists of NADH, NAC, Vit E, Vit C, Selenium, Alpha Lipoic Acid, Fish Oil, and Folic Acid, plus a multi-vitamin. Because my cholestrol levels have increased, I have added Niacin to the mix (but NOT at the therapeutic cholesterol dose - don't like the readings of liver effects). I take everything in the morning generally with breakfast. Those that require an empty stomach (like the NADH), I take an hour before breakfast. My doctor wanted to put me on cholesterol-lowing drugs, but I have talked them out of it for now in part because of my concern with the side effects of the statins and in part because there is talk out in the Parkinson's research community that there may be a correlation/link between statins and Parkinsons. Instead am working on diet and exercise - no cheese, nonfat milk, nonfat cottage cheese, and nonfat yogurt for dairy, red meat cut WAY back, 2-4 ounces only of fish or chicken, big time increase in raw veggies and raw fruit, increase in grains, etc - you all know the drill. My question is - does anyone know if there are interactions among the supplements of which I should be aware when taking them all together? Thanks in advance. sidheag

What do you mean by " eat right " The reason I ask is that a lot of docs have been telling people a lot of hooey about what the right foods are. Guest guest
Thanks for the link. By " eating right " , what I mean is I eat a balanced diet. I don't lean toward either the " high protein " or the high carb diets. I stay away from junk food & fast food, eat fruits or veggies at every meal. Eat whole grains for my grains. Eat primarily lean meat instead of alot of huge portions of red meat, though I do eat red meat a couple of times a month. For the next 3 months, I have taken myself off of dairy, except nonfat milk, nonfat cottage cheese, and low or nonfat yogurt. I am also keeping my cholesterol intake well below 200 mg a day. I have bumped up the fiber a lot. I needed to do that anyway because of the Parkinsons. I figure if my cholesterol doesn't come down after 3 months of this regimen, then it isn't diet that is going to control it! sidheag > Not an expert on possible interactions, but I do have a > question for you. Guest guest
Evening SigHead, Lots of good details for discussion. I eat similar to you with a few exceptions. I have a few questions for you. > I figure if my cholesterol doesn't come down after 3 months of this >regimen, then it isn't diet that is going to control it! What makes you think it is not exactly where it needs to be? >For the next 3 months, I have taken myself off of dairy, except nonfat >milk, nonfat >cottage cheese, and low or nonfat yogurt. I won't buy or eat anything that says " low fat " . As a matter of fact I try to eat more and more fat and less and less carbs except for fruit, berries, and raw vegetables. I use flax oil, coconut oil, raw eggs, and eat all the fried foods I want. >Thanks for the link. By " eating right " , what I mean is I eat a >balanced diet. I have been trying to accomplish that for over 40 years and don't think I have made it yet. Possibly I have but don't know it. All in all, I agree with your ideas except the low fat routine. Be careful that you don't let the mainstream misinformation cause you to miss the target. I have many friends that have tried to eat healthy for years, but based on mainstream misinformation, they have become sick, diseased, and some have died. Guest guest
Wayne, Thanks for the response. I don't actually know that my cholesterol isn't where it " needs " to be, now that you mention it!! It was 244, which the doctors didn't like. As I said in my first post, I talked her out of putting me on medication because I didn't want an interaction issue with my Parkinsons meds. The cholesterol has been about 200 for the last 2 yrs. I am extremely active and athletic, and my research suggests that as women age, their cholesterol does rise because it isn't being converted into estrogen at the rate it was when we were younger. So I am not terribly concerned about it, but am making the attempt to lower it if possible nevertheless. > I have a few questions for you. > > > I figure if my cholesterol doesn't come down after 3 months of this > >regimen, then it isn't diet that is going to control it! > > What makes you think it is not exactly where it needs to be? > I appreciate your " low fat " position. Refer to above. That is what I am doing for now to see if it makes a difference. Additionally, I do have to moderate protein intake with my Parkinson's meds. They use the same receptors, and protein inhibits absorption of the meds. > > I won't buy or eat anything that says " low fat " . As a matter of fact I > try to eat more and more fat and less and less carbs except for fruit, > berries, and raw vegetables. I use flax oil, coconut oil, raw eggs, and > eat all the fried foods I want. > I'm not too big on " mainstream " info. I tend to go with what my body says. If I am hungry for red meat, I eat it. If I am hungry for carbs (e.g., pasta), I eat it. Right now I am just eating smaller portions of those foods high in cholesterol. And I have bumped up raw fruits & veggies, and fiber.
