Guest guest
Zinc is a mineral and should not be taken without some consideration of the downside. Unless you have other reasons 30 mg of zinc per day is plenty, if taking zinc lozenges for a sore throat this may be exceeded fro a day or so then be careful. On the other hand; 1000 mg of C every hour will help most colds far more than a smaller dose! There is no know problem with taking too much Vitamin C except maybe a small discomfort. Good Luck Lorenzo >30 mg of zin and 250 mg of vitamin C taken every 4 hours helps the symptoms of an irritated head cold. Also taking echenaica. (sp?)> --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Guest guest
Thanks, I had decided that I would not go out and get additional zinc supplements but I appreciate knowing that it should not be overdone anyway. As I have said in a previous post, he is on 7,000 mg vit c a day (actually I have just checked his daily supplements and he is on at least 8,500 mg a day ) as well as other things so I think we have it pretty much covered now. Guest guest
Don't knock it until you tried it. Over the counter zinc lozengers have about 15 mg in it and I need two for it to work with my body weight. During a cold the zinc has the ability to fill up a gap in the blood cells that the virus moves in to. So for the duration of the cold it is a good fix. I first took vitamin C for my cold and it does nothing at all for me. So there is something for everyone and zinc plus C may help someone out there that doesn't respond with vitamin C alone. I didn't make this stuff up, I got the ingredients off of a bottle of lozengers that I bought and it works. There may be conditions where taking zinc isn't for that individual, (like most things are.) I know someone who has mild anemia and found out that taking zinc daily will inhibit the absorbtion of iron into blood cells. She however can take the 15mg tablets. It is short term the length of a cold, not a daily thing. What is the down side? Maybe the reason for such a bad cold is because of the lack of zinc in the first place? In my experience, many people do not take nearly enough C to knock out a bad cold. Alobar
Guest guest
Alobar, I tried taking 1,000mg of C alone but didn't feel any change. But if I take the zinc I only need 250 mg of C. Or to substitute a large glass of orange juice. Right now the bottle of vitamin C I have is in 500 mg. dose. What is interesting is that my son doesn't feel any change with his cold on zinc. He takes the vitamine C and echanacia. I don't understand this. Maybe I am more mineral defiecient. Liz d. Guest guest
Homeopathic dilution of zinc makes a big difference. http://www.coldeeze.com/clinical_info/studies.html Coldeeze contains only 13.3 mg of zinc. The web page above links to research studies in PDF format. 1,000 mg of Vitamin C is nothing. When I have a cold, I routinely take 30 or more *grams* of vitamin C a day. Guest guest
Dear Alobar, Thank you for your post. You are absolutely right according to everything that I read about Vitamin C and from years of experience. To take 1000mg for illness is like throwing a teaspoon of water on a raging house burning and then use that as an example of " water not working " (or vitamin C) is exactely what the medical establishment puts out. A lot of what is " common knowkedge " that passes for info either on the net or in our society is based on spin, marketing, subterfuge, or disingenuous actions. When someone takes in information from these sources that is the first thing that they think of for a solution. Unfortunatly that is what we get for our answers, in quanity. it is best for someone to really, really learn about the facts from the best impartial sources, few though they may be. Otherwise the majority of information available to the average person is the mountains of stuff from commercial or pop interests. In our current society, each person must learn for himself and not to trust without investigation to a signifigant level by looking at really good research. It is not plentiful but it is available. thanks, Frank - In Gettingwell, " Alobar " <alobar@b...> wrote: > Homeopathic dilution of zinc makes a big difference. > http://www.coldeeze.com/clinical_info/studies.html Coldeeze contains > only 13.3 mg of zinc.
