BUT, they should not be used unless the person actually is Yang Deficient. Taking too many Yang tonic herbs can result in a person developing symptoms of Yin Deficiency - restlessness, anxiety, insomnia, nervousness, night sweats, " malar " (blotchy) flushing of the face (particularly on the cheeks), diabetes (in some cases - particularly if the person already is Yin Deficient), etc. Yang warms, activates, and dries. One manifestatin of Yang Deficiency are hypo-glandular states. Another is loss of libido. When a person is Yang Deficient there is not enough Yang to warm the body properly. Consequently, the person stays cold a lot and has trouble warming up. The person usually does worst in winter healthwise, and prefers the summer. Urination is frequent, profuse, and clear. The person also may need more sleep than normal. Fatigue is extreme. Yin cools, calms, and moistens. In Yin Deficiency there is not enough Yin to propertly cool and calm the body. Hence, the feeling too hot a lot and having trouble cooling down. The person tends to do worse in summer than other seasons of the year and prefer the winter. Sexual drive is excessive. If there is Kidney Yang Deficiency, there will be fatigue, but this is a person who will keep going even though tired. Nervous energy. The TCM view of sex is that both too much or too little can harm health. Too much depletes the Kidney Yang and Jing. Too little also can damage the Kidneys. One example of a Yang tonic herb is epimedium, aka Herba Epimendii, aka Yin Yang Huo, aka Horny Goat Weed. It is specifically indicated not only in many cases of loss of libido (though Yang Deficiency is not the only possible cause of loss of libido) but also in cases of Wind Cold Dampness invasion and Painful Obstruction Syndrome. (Arthritis. The Chinese see arthritis and rheumatism (Painful Obstruction or Bi Syndrome as being due to Wind, Cold, and/or Dampness.) Epimendium is contraindicated in cases of Yin Deficiency with Heat. An overdose can result in spasm and respiratory arrest. The dose is 3-5 qian. That's 9 to 15 grams. The easiest way for most people to find epimedium is one of those herbal formulas for men or which advertise themselves as " herbal viagra " . There usually are other herbs as well in these preparations. Some of them are other Yang tonic herbs, some are not. BUT, women also can be Yang Deficient so these " men's formulas " are not just for men. Just like men can be Blood Deficient, and " women's formulas " aren't just for women. A store here offers pure epimedium in capsules, but wanted way, way too much for it. I order it like I order a lot of my herbs - in bulk. I prefer to make teas out of it instead of grind it up and put it into capsules. I have an on-going vulnerability and tendency to Kidney Yang Deficiency (way too Cold), and taking certain herbs as a hot tea works better for me than taking them in a capsule. Guest guest
> Hi Victoria...what if you have symptoms of both yin and yang > deficiencies [except for the raging libido]? Thanks for allthe > info..scarlett If it's Kidney Yin or Yang Deficiency, the other is almost certain to be present (though less severe). Sometimes the symptoms of both will be present, but sometimes the Kidney Yang or Kidney Yin Deficiency will be so severe as to mask completely or almost mask completely the symptoms of the other. It's only as one is corrected that the symptoms of the other becomes more apparent. Because if the Kidneys are involved, both are almost certain to be present, Kidney Yang tonic formulas will include some Kidney Yin tonic herbs, and Kidney Ying tonic formulas will include some Kidney Yang tonic herbs. BTW, the Kidneys supply the Yin and the Yang to the rest of the body. If you're having trouble with weather sensitivity and/or tending to catch infections easily and frequently, this can point to something called Protective Qi Deficiency. Qi, also spelled ch'i, pronounced chee, is roughly (though inadequately) translated as energy. That definition will do. There are different types of Qi in the body. Protective Qi circulates at the surface of the body and gives people protection against " Pernicious Evils " . These are Heat, Cold, Damp, Dryness, and Wind. In other words, weather conditions. But also artificial weather conditions like air conditioning, air dryers, heating systems, etc. Protective Qi also gives protection against many pathogens (but not all). Astragalus is a very good Qi tonic herb that specifically strengthens Protective Qi. But as a general rule, don't take it while you have an infection. Clear the infection first. Any of the Qi tonic herbs can feed infection. The Spleen is the TCM Organ most involved in Qi production in the body, so it's also a good idea to strengthen the Spleen with good diet, enough rest, not obsessing, not studying too much, not overdoing physically, etc. (Common English words like Spleen that have special meaning in TCM (Traditional ) are capitalized to indicate that they don't correspond exactly to the Western definitions.) BTW, the common cold is called Wind Cold invasion in Chinese. But it also can be due to Wind Heat invasion. Cold or Heat teamed up with Wind can make a person more vulnerable to developing colds (and certain other infections). The Chinese see arthritis and rheumatism as due to Cold, Dampness, and/or Wind. TCM treatment is directed to expelling the Perncious Evil. There are herbs that " release the Exterior " and warm the Exterior. There also are herbs that expel Wind Dampness. Guest guest
There's a company online called Sunrider who sell a product named Veros designed to accomplish exactly what you're talking about with other, secondary beneficial effects, and no side effects. It is formulated with food grade herbs, and I believe contains some Saw Palmetto. If you try it, be sure to let us know what you think of it! (the secondary effects which have been reported are increased muscle tone, energy and directed purposefulness in decision making and activities) --- a_newking <a_newking wrote: > I wanted to use some supplements that would give the > similar effects > of Viagra. Again, I caution please do not use these products unless there actually are signs and symptoms of Kidney Yang Deficiency. Symptoms and signs like actual loss of libido (not just wanting more of a good thing), feelings of cold and having trouble warming up, slow movements and speech, shiny pale complexion, pale tongue with a white coating, frequent and profuse and clear urination, extreme fatigue, needing to sleep a lot and tending to sleep in a curled up position, possible incontinence, not feeling thirsty and when liquids are consumed there is a preference for hot soups, a tendency to hypoglandular states, etc. All of these symptoms need not be present for a diagnosis of Kidney Yang Deficiency, but if they all are this is a person who is severely Yang Deificient and probably has been that way for some time. One thing I want to stress is that herbs can be very effective. They usually are a lot cheaper, safer, and often are more effective than prescription drugs (though they tend to work slower). Because they are effective this means they do have side effects when used inappropriately. The contraindication for Yang tonic herbs is Yin Deficiency with Heat. If there are signs and symptoms of Yin Deficiency with Heat, one either should take these herbs not at all or in formulas designed to get around the Heat problems. One should either see a trained TCM (Traditional ) herbalist or do a lot of research before proceding. The signs and symptoms of Yang Deficiency with Heat are " malar " (blotchy) flush on face (especially over the cheek bones), feeling hotter during the afternoon and early evening than at other times, night sweats, " 5-Palm Heat " (Heat in the palms of the hands, soles of the feet, and chest area), red tongue tissue with yellow coating, rapid movement and pulse, feelings of aggitation, nervous energy, insomnia charaterized by falling asleep ok but frequent waking during the night, excessive appetite, feeling thirsty a lot, infrequent and dark urination, feeling hot a lot and having trouble cooling down, excessive libido, etc. Because herbs are effective, there are possible side effects when they are used incorrectly. Yes, it appears arginine can be taken both topically and internally. Also, depending on how you define " inexpensive, " www.actionlove.com sells a cream with l-arginine in it for $30. The doctor who wrote the site says that L-Lysine is needed as well.... " My advice in taking a High Dose of L-Arginine is: you should take L-Lysine to prevent allergic responses (over-production of histamine) " He also sells an internal formula with L-arginine, but that one is more expensive, about $70. You may have better luck at your local health food store. (And BTW, if you are sensitive to graphic pictures then don't go to the website mentioned above, though I should point out that the author of the web site puts the pictures there not for titillation but for education...) here is the URL for ordering from the site: https://www.actionlove.com/orderform.htm Mindy
