From 23-25 August 2005, Malaysia will host the world’s first international conference and exhibition to address the role of traditional medicine in women’s healthcare. BACKGROUND: Recognising that women are the major users of complementary and traditional medicine worldwide and that Asian traditional medical knowledge offers unique understandings of women’s physiology, health needs and means for the prevention and cure of disease, the conference will be held in Malaysia, home to the major healthcare traditions of Asia – Malay, Chinese and Indian. Every day, throughout the world, women make decisions about what medicines to use for their own health and that of their family: the question they face is “what medicine to use – modern medicine, traditional medicine, or both? And in what way?” And Asian traditional medicine, according to the new World Health Organization Global Atlas on Traditional, Complementary & Alternative Medicine, is the most globalized of the world’s traditional healthcare approaches. ‘WHAT Medicine’ is thus a suitable acronym for this landmark international conference. THEMES: WHAT Medicine will bring together leading regional and international scientists and traditional healthcare experts to showcase the use of Asian traditional medicine by women worldwide. It will highlight the available healthcare options for women’s health concerns such as reproductive health, ageing, and skin health and disease. WHAT Medicine will also address safety considerations and the preventative and lifestyle enhancing potential of Asia’s traditional healthcare approaches. While there have been many conferences and much research on women’s health - and on traditional medicine - there has been no meeting till now that combines both perspectives to understand the healthcare choices of the majority of the world’s women. VENUE & SPONSORS: The conference will be hosted at the new Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre by the Journal of Tropical Medicinal Plants and supported by the Malaysian Ministry of Science Technology & Innovation, the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development, the Ministry of Art, Culture & Heritage and by Malaysia Tourism. The Journal of Tropical Medicinal Plants (JTMP), the world’s first and only journal to focus exclusively on research into tropical medicinal plants, is guided by leading local and international experts and is distributed to centres of scientific and herbal excellence worldwide. The journal is an entirely Malaysian effort and is supported by Tropical Botanics and the Malaysian Herbal Corporation. WHAT Medicine is held in celebration of JTMP’s 5th Anniversary. The opening ceremony at the KLCC Convention Centre is just one week before Merdeka, Malaysia’s Independence Day, and the closing ceremony is on Malaysian Woman’s Day. PARTICIPATION OF LEADING INTERNATIONAL SCIENTISTS AND EXPERTS: The conference is being supported by a high level international team of scientists and traditional medicine practitioners and is co-chaired by: Professor Gerard Bodeker of Oxford University Medical School & the Mailman School of Public Health, Columbia University, and former Chair of the Commonwealth Working Group on Traditional & Complementary Medicine; and Professor Fredi Kronenberg, Director of the Rosenthal Centre for Alternative & Complementary Medicine in the College of Physicians & Surgeons, Columbia University, USA. Professor Maryanne Legato, a cardiologist and clinical professor at Columbia University, New York, is founder of the important new field of gender-specific medicine and will be a keynote speaker at WHAT Medicine. Prof Rui-Juan Xiu, another keynote speaker, is Director of China’s National Institute of Microcirculation in Beijing, and has pioneered the use of traditional medicine in combating major diseases. She has also done extensive research on the effects of traditional in treating skin disease. Dr Padma Venkat, Joint of India’s National Medicinal Plants Herbarium in Bangalore, has studied the use of kitchen herbal gardens. She will present important new research on more than 2 million Indian village families showing that family health improves significantly and healthcare costs are reduced when rural families grow their own medicinal plants and use them in everyday healthcare. 500 international participants are expected from Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, China, United Kingdom, Australia and the United States. PARTICIPATION OF LEADING INTERNATIONAL JOURNALS: As a result of the uniqueness of the event, WHAT Medicine is being supported by two internationally accredited journals: The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine (http://www.liebert.com/acm) and the Journal of Women’s Health (http://www.liebert.com/jwh) PARTICIPATION OF MALAYSIA’S WOMEN LEADERS: WHAT Medicine will be opened on the morning of 23 August 2005 by the wife of Malaysia’s Prime Minister, YBhg Datin Seri Endon binti Mahmood.
