Guest guest
Adrienne: Thanks for the Madonna news - that's some major PR for Ayurveda! Question for all: 2 new moms are experiencing anal fissures - sharp pain during BM and streams of bright red blood. One has been diagnosed by her MD and has tried a very potent, toxic cream which made her very sick. What treatments can I offer before they consider surgery?! I am thinking about oil bastis with turmeric and pitta-pacifying herbs? Martha, have you treated this before? Perhaps some internal herbs and pitta-pacifying diet as well? Also, my baby has been spitting up too much lately. Curdy and obviously pitta agg. I am eating a pacified diet, but should I also take some herbs or continue fennel tea for her? Thanks so much! Peace to you all, Cora
Guest guest
Hi Cora; Although I have not treated, nor do I have license to treat anything, many mothers with HIGH VATA have dry, painful and cracked or hemmoroidal bowels, as we know. Secondary would be considered possible pitta concerns, in my opinion. Certainly I would be supporting with major internal oleation/ghee (1 - 2 tablespoons per meal, and at least 1 tsp per cup of hot milk tonic with turmeric and cardamom, minimum 2 X daily) and depending upon the actual severity of torn tissue, possibly ghee soaked cotton ball if possible with therapeutic grade lavender oil or even better, helichrysum (very expensive) oil several drops would be my first call. The essential oils (these ) are both analgesic (latter is most powerful one I know for that) and help heal tissues. The helichrysum also stops bleeding on contact. I'm sure there are herbals also recommended, amalkaki comes to mind although Im not sure why except for it's astringent secondary along with pitta reducing, bowel toning and blood building. I do know that ayurvedically prepared alum (extreme astringent) is used in Ayurveda for strong hemostatic action, and could be added to the ghee also in very small amount. It is so vata increasing, it is probably contraindicated postpartum for internal use, although it served me in menopause tremendously, along with other herbs in a formula and administered 2-3X daily in get this - paste of cold butter! I have to leave that disussion more to those who know, and to the time to research it for my own learning process. How far postpartum are these ladies? Isn't it interesting how things come in pairs? It has happened to me often with clients. Re your baby, you are extra busy these days, right? Lots of travel, doing different things, and deadline for your dissertation? I've seen many times babies with reflux when they need more settled energy. At least while nursing and just after. Perhaps some herbs would be also, for these reasons, helpful for her through your milk, yes. Which ones do you think? Ie, not just digestive support, but calming/strengthening, steadying? She is almost 6 months now? Some fennel/chamomile tea is worth a try. Essential oils can also be used to help here, topical/diffused.
