Guest guest
Dear Vicky, Thanks for raising a querry, which made this author think and go into meditative mood for a number of days. Ayurveda is not a science where you have a remedy for each and every disorder/ailment. Many diseases and conditions are regarded as karmic, where only spiritual solutions are to be saught. " Genes " determine the abilities of our cells, and no choice in choosing the genes left to us. According to this authors experience, the prakruti of a baby can be easily made out by a practitioner by noting the ability of the baby to gain weight. To understand this let us see what causes weight gain. People gain weight when the body takes in more calories than it burns off. Those extra calories are stored as fat. When this pattern keeps repeating for months and years, obesity develops. Genes - small parts of the DNA that people inherit from their parents and that determine traits like hair or eye color - can play an important role in this weight gain. Some of our genes tell our body how to metabolize food and how to use extra calories or stored fat. Some people burn calories faster or slower than others do because of their genes. The weight gain driven by genes can run in families, but just how much is due to genes is hard to determine. Many families eat the same foods, have the same habits (like snacking in front of the TV), and tend to think alike when it comes to weight issues. Western doctors notice that some people are always active and wish to take up some activity without tiring out. They may not have hefty bodies or muscles but they are active. On the other hand, people with hefty or large bodies, heavy weights are sluggish in movements and would not like to take up physical work. They are inherently lazy, move like an elephant: slow and in rhythm. Slow and steady wins the race. " Pitta " type can win running race if it is for a short time. Their energy develops in " spikes " on a graphical curve, when plotted against time. When judging the " prakruti " of the baby many of these criteria defined in ayurveda can be used. Prakruti of the baby is donated by parents. If both parents have excess of one dosha, same will accentuate in the baby. On the other hand if the dosha of the parents balance each other, the baby will have those doshas in moderate quantity, lesser than parents. That is why Indian ancient acharyas developed doshas linked to nadis of natal moon star. boy and girl of identiacal nadi (identical dosha in excess) should not marry. Though this is practiced in India, for those who do not know ayurveda in this form (spiritual, often taking principles of astrology into account) based on some thinking, author proposes following characteristics to identify baby " prakruti " . To use these characteristics, one may require to develop comparison ability between different babies. Keep your eye open and keep observing and knowing the babies. Soon you will develop that " third " eye. A Vatic baby will have thin body frame, thin hair, low body weight, less bowel movements, frequent constipation, small forehead size, irregular hunger, unsteady eyes, very curious nature, relatively dry skin, cries more often and particularly if subjected to " cold " environment. Disturbed sleep, fearful of strangers, does not smile easily, a melancholy look if someone peeps deeply into their eyes. Pitta baby may have medium body frame, thin hair, medium body weight and muscularity, frequent loose bowel motions, medium forehead, strong appetite and cries more loudly when hungry, does not like heat, sunlight, shows a reddish tinge in ouside portion of eyes, Skin may become reddish easily if rubbed. Baby may become very angry and reddish face if ill-treated. Good hunger and digestion. Very energetic, keeps moving limbs regularly and rapidly. Good strength for a short while. A " Kapha " dominant baby may be recognized by hair. Large firehead and body frame, heavy weight, silky dense smooth hair, good ability to gain weight. Moderate and solid bodwel movement, constant appetite but gets satisfied with little feed, wide eyes, white sides, always smiling innocence can be seen in eyes. Oily skin, sweats more, does not like cold damp environment, but still enjoys bath, playing in water. More sleep, laziness, clings to mother, likes fondling, and will go to any other lady without fear/suspicion. This baby gives happiness to whoever gives them a little attention or something to eat. Likes wide variety in food, colors. The weight gain of such babies is often due to emotions. Just as we tend to eat more when we are upset, anxious, sad, stressed out, or even bored. Then after we eat too much, we may feel bad about it and eat more to deal with those bad feelings, creating a tough cycle to break. For " Kapha " baby, often black eyes. Likes changes and movements. Take this baby in a vehicle and it enjoys the dynamically changing scenes. Will often go to sleep in such a condition. The above characteristics author derived mainly through various elements which make Vata (Ether), Pitta (Fire+Air), Kapha (Earth+water) as well as their respective planets in astrology which contribute to doshas: Vata (Saturn and mercury), Pitta (Sun, Mars), Kapha (Moon, Venus, Jupiter). Vaidyas and astrologers can easily decide the major and minor " prakruti " of a baby by studying the natal chart alone. ayurveda , <VMYORK wrote: > > how do we know what a baby's Prakruti is? Or are you saying that we should simply let the baby gain weight at his own speed once we are assured that the mother has adequate milk and the latch and frequency is good and perhaps work with the mothers diet. I know that one of the things that truly can affect the mother's breastmilk composition is how much fat she eats, it can increase the fat content in her breastmilk. Guest guest
Dr. Bhate, thank you so much for the thought you put into this for us. You are so patient to explain so thoroughly to people who are not all learned about ayurvedic healing. I wish I had started looking at babies with an " ayurvedic eye " when I first started my work with lactation and newborns and had learned long ago to look at the whole person.
