Guest guest
hi janel, thank you so much for your thoughtful post, full of passion for your beliefs. i couldnt agree with you more. right now i am a student at SBGI and learning so much. i have worked for 15 years as a postpartum doula and have seen some amazing things. in the past few years i have noticed babies have a lot more trauma, primarily from horrendous birth experiences and they really have a hard time in the weeks following their births. recently i worked for a mother of twins that had a c-sec, they were born a month early and both were in the nic-u. one came home a week earlier than the other. the mother decided after much ambivilance about breastfeeding, she would pump once a day.....to only give them formula. she would leave me with the babies for 5-7 hours per day and i would hold them and feed them.....they did not have much contact with mom as she was tired and went upstairs. i felt so bad for them. when i would go to feed them, they didnt even bother to open their eyes, its as if they just shut down when they realized what they were getting and it was not mommy. in the end i resolved it my thinking well, i am an extremely loving person, so at least they are getting my energy, but how sad for those little girls...... hey thanks for listening, mavis www.gentlecaredoulaservice.com www.sacredmotherarts.ocm
Guest guest
Thank you for sharing --- I am sure all of the ayurvedic doulas can relate. You all are there AFTER it is all done. Most doulas only have a follow-up or two. I am working on a training for doulas and postpartum doulas -- to learn how to be with the family and baby in the first weeks and months and to support the family to heal (ie. the reasons the mother was so detached). This period sets the foundation for relationship for a lifetime. That is what is so important to acknowledge. AND, it's not easy for someone like yourself to see it and do your best mentally, emotionally, and spiritually for the baby(ies), knowing that they need more and you know it can't came from you -- that you can just do the best you can where you are. The training piece was an inspiration -- a gift to me -- from my grandson who was born last December. Thanks for sharing.
