Guest guest
Is peanut butter a bad choice for nursing mothers? I have a client who wants to eat it. Thanks, Sonya
Guest guest
Not unless nuts are strongly allergenic for the family. It would have been worse if the mom had sensitized her baby to peanuts in utero but through the breast milk shouldn't be a problem now. At least from an allopathic point of view. I'l be interested in the ayurvedic angle. >sonyabastow <sonya >Sep 2, 2008 12:49 AM >ayurveda >PerinatalAyurveda forum peanut butter > >Is peanut butter a bad choice for nursing mothers? Guest guest
Hi Sonya - Not having heard my teachers comment on this, here is my way of working with the same questions, and client experience. Although peanuts are not really a nut but a legume, and have a more dulling effect on the mind being tamasic, they tend to better than the other legumes (undoubtedly having also a different protein profile, that's for another discussion as I don't know it) - and I've also seen from a non-Ayurvedic body type system (Carolyn Mein's extensive work as a dietitian on her 25 body type system, blessed by jyotish astrologer as knowledgeable, valuable!) that certain " body types " she calls Gall bladder types - my mother is among them, do really well with peanut butter and tend to favor it among all the " nuts " . Listen to people's cravings and adjust them by ayurvedic principles for the first couple postpartum months or whenever - by agni and other supports as you can. For instance, with peanut butter, if that is what is in the mother's desire or kitchen, if possible just like with the other nut butters, We can thin, warm, digestively/deliciously spice it for her weak digestive fire, maybe making a sauce for vegetables and rice, or a nut milk, or a spread with some honey and flax oil on unleavened breads. It will lessen the vata in the flax oil, make it more palatable, thin the heaviness and tamasic properties (also try cardamom cinnamon ginger), and so many are so low on the EFA3s also....And this concoction (also do with other nut butters) Mothers have been delighted with the taste, texture and specialness which is so easy to create. For Baby, just as for Mom, the same issues as you know Sonya. If Mom's milk is too heavy, tamasic, or Mom is simply not digesting her food properly, Baby may have related issues.
