Guest guest
Greetins Ones, It has been awhile and now that I have been through the shadow of motherhood, life has put me on my path to continue this journey....... I supported a free birth about 2 weeks ago, Mom birthed quickly in about two hours baby was born and about 45 mins the placenta. She has been driniking fennel tea and has kind of been relaxing, she is kind of high strung thick built women with two other children to tend to at home as well , and she is not producing any milk. I am pretty sure it is how the baby is latching on, he is not putting enough of the breast in his mouth, but as well mom is tense and feeling pressure from Dad, she has already put him on formula. I went for a postnantal massage vist yesterday, worked on accupressure points for nursing and encourage her to continue to put him to the breast, she said he has been nursing so hard that the roof of his mouth is raw and he even started to bleed. The emotional toll of of no lactation you can see on her face this is her fourth baby she has successfully nursed her other three children. Here in Panama there are few resources for lactation challenges and as my journey as adoula has activley taken me I acknowledge my lack of probelm solving when it comes to breastfeeding ( I have nursed all five of my children) So Iam reaching out for some help any advice would be appreciated as well as maybe some resources via the internet for us women here in caentral america... Guest guest
If you can obtain Shatawari Ghrut, let her take 1 tbsp in warm milk twice a day. (after breakfast and bedtime are preferred). It has given very good results in the cases similar to the one mentioned by you. In case it is difficult to obtain locally or on net, contact this author. Guest guest
Jahmanna, good to hear from you; i'm glad to hear you are still doing doula work as planned (and learning on the job as we all do). If the latch is not good the mom would be complaining about pain. baby's mouth wouldn't bleed from nursing hard, but moms nipple would bleed and it would seem that the blood is coming from his mouth but really it's her nipple. working with the latch is the most important. every time baby gets formula the breast needs to be pumped for that feeding or the breasts will get the message less milk is needed and will dry up. baby should nurse every 2-3 hrs, with wide open latch, lips flanged out. You will know he is getting enough if he is pooping at least 4 times a day and wetting diaper 8 times a day. If not he will get dehydrated and will indeed need formula, a little after each nursing session. Get the baby weighed, he should gain 1 ounce a day. Keep in touch with us about this. Guest guest
Jahmanna - This preparation Dr. Bhate mentions is also called shatavari ghee. Shatavari or shatawari (and other similar names) are wild asparagus root. I do not know if it grows there, it is quite likely though. The root of this plant is best lactation and female rejuvenation herb we know I think is safe to say. Use plain in milk or almond milk also will do. I wonder if this mother is being vegan or raw foodist? Do all the vata pacifying things you can for her - warm oily massage, simple and repetitios. warm bath, yeseven hot water bottles on tummy, lower back, breasts feels good in hot climate on newly delivered mothers. This can be done with zip lock bag and hot cloths, just hot wet cloths in fomentation. The heat, oiliness internal and external warm soupy foods, and perhaps a little food chain in her community will helop her relax into natures natural processes more. The latching yes, is also very important, but if she is not lactating, that is something else. Under stress, milk may delay fully coming in for a week or more, does not mean it won't. No cold drinks...no raw except sweet fresh fruits...what is she doing for fats/what is available there? If coconut, it must be warmed energetically with spices such as roasted garlic (this as a chutney with salt, pepper, ghee, mayb elime juice is excellent thing that will keep several days prepared for her and also helps promote lactation.) Tell us what you have learned in your assessment of her appetite, digestion, elimination, rest, moods, weight loss, lochia, other herbs, food intake principles important to her and use specifics, temperature, community or family support....like that if you can. at how many days postpartum? Mom is constantly drinknig ICE cold water alot of Panamians have this bad habit, I know right now dad is only eating raw foods and I think she is joining him, alot of salads and dreesing made from coconut water although the two little ones are eating cooked food. Mom is about two and a half weeks postpartum she shares what she wants with me and has told me that she is resting but honestly I don't belive her ( she has been painting the baby's room) Her mom is there with her but dad is usually gone all day. She looks about four months pregnant as far as wieght, she has shared with me that her locia is almost to nothing. I honestly think nerves have a big part in this i am going to her house with some chamomile I have encourage her to take warm baths with the baby and drink teas, which she is drinking fennel, but because she is a hot body person ( is constantly warm)so warm anything she really isn't into.iam going to drop off as well an electric pump today to see if it helps to stimulate ) I will definatley pass on and suggest seee if she is open to them. Thanks again. Jahmanna

Guest guest
Sounds like she has a pile of reasons to have these challenges and sometimes we can only wish them well and know that the love that connects it all is always so important. Sometimes I get clients to try what sounds conterintelligent to them by explaining we can cool off in other ways, while nourishing the body's ability to (in this case) produce more milk. She wants to stay cool, favor roses, mints, oatstraw, shatavari, coriander, cumin, even pinches of clove are postdigestively cooling, while the warm temp beverages or at LEAST not iced, support the body's channels better to relax and do their job. Attachment to the raw foods...is that there? Painting baby's room, definitely does not count as resting. She clearly has strength as well as imbalances. It is NOT natural Not to lactate for your baby, and without being blaming, we can say her situation means there is some shortage of support for her own body's functions going on based upon not knowing otherwise, and all best intent. Yes, the nervous system takes it hard usually when vata is high, when there has been lots of change and invisible work not being attended to. And how are her bowels moving? How is the pumping going? How did the 3 week growth spurt go? there will be another usually right at 5 weeks. Best of luck and wisdom and love - Ysha PS, kindly delete most of the previous email before responding.
