Guest guest
Hi guys, Just a quick note to say that there is no such thing (at least in the US) as a " therapeutic grade " EO, nor brand that sells them exclusively. This is Grade A hype and it never fails to irk me. In short: beware! If your supplier is claiming fantastical claims, in addition to offering 'therapeutic grade' oils, just run the other way! Take care (of that hard-earned money!), Stacey
Guest guest
Hey Stace . . . And All, Sorry I've been so absent of late . . . Much on the plate here. You are absolutely right; there are no therapeutic 'grade' essential oils . . . However, there are therapeutic 'quality' essential oils which are superior and are those sought by aromatherapists and integrative medical professionals. The general criteria to ascertain would be: 1) Extracted from a single known plant species . . . i.e., Lavandula angustifolia, Rosmarinus officinalis 2) Biochemical class or chemotype, as well as purity, identified by msgc analysis 3) Country of origin identified (place plant was grown) nice to know other aspects, elevation, climactic conditions 4) Specific method of extractions, i.e., steam distilled, critical carbon dioxide extraction 5) The specific plant part extracted, i.e., root/rhizome, flowering tops/flowers only, bark/branches, so on 6) Although not always available, superior oils are extracted from plants that are wildcrafted or grown without pesticides 7) Identified by date of harvest and processing (Lot/Batch specific) . . . to assure that oils are not processed from plant material already deteriorating (as is the case sometimes if plant material is harvested in one country then sent to another for distilling) or to assure the extracted oils are not past their prime and have begun to oxidize Stacey is right that there is not one exclusive company; many good essential oil importers often (sometimes unknowingly) share the same producers and distillers. An important thing for any importer to maintain is the chain of evidence from plant to bottle if they are to represent quality aromatics. This is developed over the time-honored relationships that are developed in the industry. And, have to reiterate others' advice to always dilute essential oils before skin application.
