Guest guest
While browsing Discovery Channel about *Ancient 'Treasure' Found in Farmer's Bookshelf* (http://dsc.discovery.com/news/2008/12/22/treasure-of-satricum-02.html ) I followed a link on perfume and landed here: http://health.howstuffworks.com/history-of-aromatherapy4.htm I'd forgotten about Maria Prophetissa (also known as Mary the Jewess) but enjoyed re-finding her. If anyone has any other information about this exceedingly clever woman I love to read more about her. Have a wonderful Christmas (or holiday if you dont celebrate Christmas.) Guest guest
I know of no evidence to back these claims. What is most likely is that they were producing aromatic waters as that was the common way of processing aromatic plants. Of course you would get a film of oil, but nothing like distillation for that purpose would achieve. As far as I can tell, the first use of true distillation was to produce kerosene from natural pools of crude oil circa 600AD. Even the pots found in the Indus valley are not conclusive of essential oil production but probably for aromatic waters.
