Guest guest
Hi all: Haven't been active on any of my lists in a long time due to health, etc. During that time, my noted addy for this group was ATFE2@, nowadays my digest is coming into my spam list as ATFE without the 2. Is this correct? issue or a change? Do admit to erasing some digests when the inbox was too full during the last year or so. <Blush> Have made a change to my addy book that looks like the above. Will wait to see if this comes thru. ;0) Good to see some of your posts to do a quick catch up. Do have a question for those of you with 100% recall....Somewhere in one of my books it tells where on your property is the best place for Elder Sambucus nigra to be placed. One or two have arrived next to my kitchen window in a flower bed on the NW-N side of the house. Was thinking it was SW for protection as per old wives tales. Course the one on the SW was hit by lightening and ruined. Definitely want to place this or these in the best place in the near future. Was delighted to have them show up, but they must now be moved. Thank you birds for this showing. One tale says the Sambucus nigra will watch over your other herbs. Thanks for any input & my best to you and yours, deb
Guest guest
Hi Deb, nice to see you again. Hope your health is improved and you're doing better. We have many Sambacus on our property; they pop up all over. I don't think there is any rhyme or reason for where they will thrive, except maybe soil considerations. I don't see any in the heavy clay part of our property where drainage is a problem. They seem to sprout next to old stumps, which means birds or likely squirrels deposit the seeds. Most of ours are in the open (not necessarily at the sheltered edge of woods) with good light source. They are very hardy and stand up to our high winds. I like to cut them fairly severely and annual new growth can get up to 14-15 ft. I have one that I ignored and over several years it probably got to 18-25 ft. You want to give them lots of room, and probably up to 4-6 hours sun. I wouldn't plant them where sun gets extreme and too dry in late summer. I've never tried to transplant as we always have so many I don't need to. You might look around your property and see if you've got some new ones coming up, in which case, if your transplant fails, you at least have some new ones. Hope this helps.
