Today one of M K Gandhi's Gandson Ramchandra Gandhi pased away. NEW DELHI: Gifted philosopher Ramchandra Gandhi was found dead in his room at the India International Centre on Wednesday. The grandson of Mahatma Gandhi had checked in three days earlier to escape excessive heat at his Bengali Market residence. He had celebrated his 70th birthday on June 9. Police said that prima facie no foul play was suspected. However, the body was sent to Ram Manohar Lohia hospital for postmortem. " The cause of death will be ascertained only after that, " DCP (New Delhi) Anand Mohan said. The son of Devdas Gandhi and Lakshmi, daughter of C Rajagopalachari, he taught philosophy in Princeton University and comparative religion in Santiniketan. His books such as 'Sita's Kitchen' and 'Svaraj' offer a peepshow into his remarkably original mind. He was also a dedicated member of the Philosophy Society of St Stephen's College. Married and separated, Gandhi lived alone in a rented home. Few of his neighbours at Central Lane near Bengali Market knew that he was the elder brother of West Bengal governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi. Neighbours just remember him as the grey-haired old man clad in a kurta pajama, who would always carry his mineral water bottle and do yoga on the sidewalk every morning. Outside his residence, his letter box with a tiny " Gandhi " written in white did not seem to have been opened for several days. A newsletter of the Centre for Study of Society and Secularism lay unopened. " He realised that institutionalised philosophy had lost its adventurism and transcended his academic training to become a true thinker. Any conversation with him on any topic would give me a new insight, " said social scientist Ashis Nandi. Publisher Pramod Kapoor, who worked with him on his last book, 'Muniya's Light', said that Gandhi had become something of a recluse over the last few years but remained a very warm person. " I had spoken to him four-five days back when he said he had some more ideas that we could discuss. We usually met at IIC. He would go there in the morning, have his meals and leave only very late in the night, " said Kapoor of Roli Books. According to police, the IIC house-keeping staff got no response after knocking at his door, Room No 15, in the morning. The club authorities then tried contacting him through intercom. " When there was no response, we forced open the door and found him lying on the floor towards the door, " said IIC administrative officer A C Katoch. A resident doctor declared him dead. His brother, Rajmohan Gandhi, a well-known US-based social scientist who was in town, was the first to reach the spot. " My brother was a healthy man and never had any complaint of disease. He was staying here due to heat, " he said. Ramchandra's daughter Leela Gandhi teaches English literature in Australia. To any IIC visitor, Gandhi was a familiar sight. The club was like a second home to him. IIC members recall that Gandhi would never seek anybody's company. " He had this plastic chair which he would carry with him everywhere. Even to the tea lounge that already had chairs. Be it inside or outside in the shade of a tree, he would sit only on that chair, " said a member.
