Guest guest
http://www.mercola.com/2004/may/26/electric_air_fresheners.htm Electric Air Fresheners Can Cause CancerFears have been raised regarding the link between plug-in air freshenersand cancer compounds. Researchers at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) say thatpotentially harmful smog could accumulate inside homes through thereactions caused by electric air-fresheners and ozone. Experts believedthe reactions produced formaldehyde, which is classified as a probablecarcinogen that is believed to cause respiratory problems. Experts advised against the use of air fresheners in the home andsuggested trying to prevent the smells that you were trying to cover upin the first place. A study found that mixing ozone and air freshening chemicals producedparticles of formaldehyde-related compounds at a concentration level ofapproximately 50 micrograms in each cubic meter of air. This measurementwas nearly equivalent to the EPA's outdoor particle limit, which isconsidered to be an unhealthy level of particle exposure. Experts stated similar particles came out of the exhaust systems ofvehicles and have been linked to respiratory problems. One environmentalscientist said a possible solution to the problem was for air freshenermanufacturers to change their formulas and use fewer chemicals.Nature <http://www.nature.com/nsu/040503/040503-11.html> May 10, 2004 _____ Dr. Mercola's Comment:It's best not to introduce any chemicals into your home--and thisincludes air fresheners. If you are trying to eliminate unpleasant scents try to prevent themfrom occurring in the first place, and if you are using air freshenersbecause you like the scent you could try therapeutic<http://www.mercola.com/2004/mar/13/essential_oils.htm> essential oilsinstead. Most essential oils have antibacterial qualities and have varyingphysical and emotional effects depending on the oil, such asstimulation, relaxation, pain relief and healing. More importantly theydon't produce harmful chemicals like traditional air fresheners thatcould result in respiratory problems. If you had a chance to read my previous article on the 2004 Lung<http://www.mercola.com/2004/may/12/air_quality.htm> Association Reporton Air Quality, then you know that there are enough problems with airquality outside of your home--there's no need to create more problemswith the air inside of your home by using chemical air fresheners.·.»§« ·´¯`·.,¸¸,.·´¯`·.»§« please include ss tag thank you·.»§« ·´¯`·.,¸¸,.·´¯`·.»§« © Spiritually_Speaking spiritually_speaking- : )
