Group,

Sleep.

It refreshes us like nothing else. It can be occasionally elusive, almost always comforting, and definitely essential to our survival. And although we spend 33% of our lives asleep, we barely give it a moment's notice....until we can't sleep. Then we think about it to the point of obsession.

For millions of people, the consequences of a poor night's sleep - higher stress, increased mistakes, difficulty concentrating - are every day occurrences. But it doesn't have to be this way.

Let one of our Certified Wellness Home Consultants help you discover a Great Night's Sleep.

Getting adequate sleep might be the answer for weight loss.

Good sleep is crucial for good mental and physical health, but research shows evidence that better sleep habits are important for people who wish to control their weight.

Brain Teaser

A series of studies published in the Journal of the American Medical Association show that sleep loss disrupts metabolic and hormonal processes in the brain, which can make weight loss far more difficult.

Various chemicals and hormones play a key role in controlling appetite and weight gain, and a lack of sleep throws these chemical and hormone levels out of whack.

For instance, sleep loss affects levels of leptin - a chemical released during sleep that controls body fat by signaling when we are full. Sleep deprivation also interferes with the secretion of cortisol, a hormone that regulates appetite. Insufficient cortisol can make you feel hungry even when you've had enough to eat.

A study by the US National Institute of Mental Health says that lack of sleep also slows the reaction time in certain cellular and chemical activities, affecting hormones that help burn off calories during the day.

But the problem is twofold. Sleep experts claim that those who are sleep-deprived tend to crave high- carbohydrate, high-fat food for a quick pick-me-up. With a slower metabolism, sugars from these foods linger in the blood, and insulin production is increased, which in turn increases the storage of body fat.

More than a Weight Problem

Quality sleep is the most significant factor in both physical and mental well being. It helps recharge the brain and allows us to perform activities better.

New studies suggest that sleep may be just as important for your body as diet and exercise as it has been linked to longevity, memory enhancement, mood, alertness and blood pressure.

Not getting enough sleep impairs our work performance, increases the risk of injuries and makes it more difficult to get along with others. Our attention, memory and reaction time are also affected.

If you're lacking energy or having trouble ditching those extra pounds, try adjusting your sleeping habits. Getting an adequate amount of quality sleep might just be the answer to your trouble.

Adjusting sleep habits is a useful way to keep the mind and body in peak condition. Here are a few ideas to help you get adequate sleep.

Engage in a relaxing, non-alerting activity at bedtime such as reading or listening to music. Don't eat right before bed, but make sure you've eaten a good dinner so you don't go to bed hungry. Only get into bed when you're tired. If you don't fall asleep within 15 minutes, get out of bed, go to another room and return to your bed when you're sleepy. Create a sleep-promoting environment that is quiet, dark, cool and comfortable. Caffeine, cigarettes and alcoholic beverages don't help you sleep; in fact they may actually make sleep impossible, so avoid these substances late in the afternoon and evening. If you exercise, make sure you finish at least three hours before you go to bed. Don't take a daytime nap if you have trouble sleeping at night.

LifeStyle Program Testimonials

In July of 2002 when Ruth Williams and Char Rogers first started talking about a Life Style program using the Nikken Cardiostrides and nutritionals I was very interested. I have been on diet/weight management programs most of my life with little success. In fact, many of them I gained weight on. I am the kind of person that in the beginning I do exactly what I am supposed to do on a plan to see how it will work for me. So the fact that I had tried so many diets with little success made me a little skeptical but I was game for trying anything that would not hurt me.

We got a group together in St. Louis, it was led by Cheryl Krieg. We were on Ruth Williams daily calls and had a weekly local team call. I followed the Life Style Energy and Weight management program they had outlined faithfully and lost 40 pounds in 6 months. I believe for me there are a number of reasons for this success. One is the cardiostrides, I am not someone who likes to exercise and sometimes exercising makes me very tired. Wearing the cardiostrides is a great way to add exercise to your every daily routine. I had a pair dyed black and wear them to work. Another aspect of this plan that works for me is the Kenzen Perfect Start meal shakes because it is an easy way to start your meals with healthy food. With a little food added you can have a well balanced meal that is healthy for you. By using the 'Zone' food plan as recommended by Dr. Barry Sears has also helped. The rest of the program including journaling, drinking 8-10 8 ounce glasses of PiMag water and

taking Nikken Kenzen Nutritional supplements together make this a program good for everyone. It has been 2 years since I lost this weight and by staying on this program I have kept the weight off. I plan to do this program the rest of my life. If someone wants to get information about this program there are a couple of ways to get information and there are great support calls. The beginning of this year I wanted to get back on calls and join the calls with Jacque Leonard and Cindy Roubian. What great calls!Barb Chapman
