Guest guest
Hi Folks, My 49yo husband just underwent emergency quadruple bypass surgery last week. His cardiac arteries hadn't grown correctly, and were weak. . He had a heart attack 19 years ago, but they said at the time it was a spasm and couldn't have been prevented. They were wrong! His arteries were all severely blocked. However, his heart's in great shape, and the doctors say he has a 99% chance of at least 20 years of good cardiac health after this surgery My question is - what kind of diet should we be following after he recovers? We've always used as much organic foods as possible including our own homegrown veggies, small amounts of organic meats a few times a week, homemade food almost always, very little processed foods - none at home. He doesn't drink coffee or alcohol, smoke, or do drugs. Should we go on a high protein/low carbo diet, a meat-free, all vegetarian diet, vegan or a lowfat, low salt normal diet....which?? Guest guest
I think that eggs (especially free range organic), as is fish, are too important to choose vegan. You can use flax seed, or some of the other sources of omega 3's, but, vegan's have a tendancy to lean towards grains, and perhaps so much that the enzyme that converts your flax into the various desirable essential acids, may be compromised to where you don't have the desired benefits! You need all of your macro nutrients (protein, carbohydrates, AND fat), but in the proper form; so, if it's not broke (his heart - especially with that kind of blockage), don't fix it! A little desirable fine tuning may be all that he needs. (in summation, that would be a vote for a balanced vegetarian diet w/cold water fish 2-3 times a week). Better yet, see a certified " nutritionist " (not dietician - there is a difference), in your area, who can get a better background on what's going on, and see if perhaps his rare " disease " was something that warrants a more prohibitive diet.
