Ever wonder what causes that hated dandruff we sometimes get?

HealthScoutNews reports that scientists at Procter & Gamble Co. think they have

figured it out after examining the heads of 70 people with dandruff: It's the

fat waste of two types of fungus.

The fungi that limit your ability to wear black are called Malassezia

restricta, which was found in 70 percent of the samples, and Malassezia globosa,

which was in 45 percent of the samples. Dandruff is no small problem. It affects

half of all Caucasians and fully 80 percent of people of African descent.

So how do these two fats with the funny names create dandruff?

HealthScoutNews reports that they feed on fats secreted from your hair follicles

and leave partially digested fats that linger on your scalp. That creates

irritation and that leads to dandruff. The P & G scientists presented their study

findings to the World Congress of Dermatology with the hopes that the

information could lead to new approaches for dandruff treatment.
