Turning Yellow--Or Not

All my life, drinking carrot juice has turned my skin very yellow--almost orange

in fact. So, when I first read it, I didn't completely believe the following

statement by Norman Walker, in his " Fresh Vegetable and Fruit Juices " :

" Intestinal and liver diseases are sometimes due to a lack of certain of the

elements contained in properly preared raw carrot juice. When this is the case,

then a noticeable cleaning up of the liver may take place, and the material

which was clogging may be found to dissolve. Frequently this is released so

abundantly that the intesinal and urinary channels are inadequate to care for

this overflow, and in a perfectly natural manner, it is passed into the lymph

for elination from the body by means of the pores of the skin. This material has

a distinctly orange or yellow pigment and whle it is being so eliminated from

the body will sometimes discolor the skin. Whenever such a discoloration takes

place after drinking carrot or other juices, it is an indication that the liver

is getting a well-needed cleansing.

" It is NOT the carrot juice itself nor the carotene that comes through the

skin, as this discoloration will take place even if the juice is filtered to the

point of clearing it of all colored pigment. It is just as practical an

impossibility for the carrot pigment itself to come through the skin as it would

be for the red pigment of the beet to turn the body red or the chlorophyll of

the green vegetables to paint the skin green from within. "

I now think Walker is right. I've gone back to drinking large quantities of

carrot juice, but this time I'm also using the Gerson coffee enemas--which among

other things open the bile ducts and restore liver function. And I'm maintaining

my normal color now!

Claire, those with hypothyroidism may not be able to efficiently convert

beta-carotene to vitamin A. Historically one of the earliest ways of

diagnosing hypothyroidism was noting yellow skin pigmentation when beta

carotene was consumed even at lower doses.

I hope you are exploring this clue as well.

Hi Joan,

<Claire, those with hypothyroidism may not be able to efficiently convert

beta-carotene to vitamin A. Historically one of the earliest ways of

diagnosing hypothyroidism was noting yellow skin pigmentation when beta carotene

was consumed even at lower doses.

This is a really interesting idea and six months ago I would have accepted it as

an explanation of my own situation--a life long hypothyroid who turned yellow

with just a week of so of winter squash eating.

But it doesn't explain why now--after six months of ingesting raw carrot juice

from about 4 " horse " sized carrots a day, I haven't even a hint of yellow in my

skin. I'm pretty sure I'm still hypothyroid--during this last healing crisis my

temp was down to 96.4 during the day--when I didn't have a fever.

If it isn't the coffee enemas, then maybe it's the other vegetables I'm drinking

in. Since you say " may not be able to efficiently convert " I guess it's possible

those other vegetables are helping with the conversion. I don't know.

I have started taking Lugol's Solution (of iodine)--but that was just two days

ago, so that doesn't factor in.

Joan,

<Hi Claire, perhaps it's the iodine (which is needed for the production of

thyroxine) that's helping your thyroid function to the point where you don't

I think you were reading my post too fast. <g> Here's what I said.

<I have started taking Lugol's Solution (of iodine)--but that was just two days

ago, so that doesn't factor in.

I think there isn't any question of my life-long hypothyroidism--although the

conventional tests have rarely shown it--based on early morning temp readings

and other symptoms I found a couple of books (Barnes incl.). And there isn't any

question that the ability now to handle a very high ingestion of carrot juice

without turning yellow is something entirely new and apparently the result of

this Gerson protocol I'm following. So that means, it seems, that either the

other veggies I use in the juices or the coffee enemas are causing this change.

I suspect it's the enemas, opening up the bile ducts, but really have no idea.

Not that I need to know. I'm delighted with the change.

Hi Claire, perhaps it's the iodine (which is needed for the production of

thyroxine) that's helping your thyroid function to the point where you don't

turn yellow when ingesting your raw carrot juice.

Based on Dr. Barnes' thyroid theories, a temp of 96.4 would still indicate

some hypo activity. Do you have any of the more obvious symptoms of

hypothyroidism such as fatigue, dry and brittle hair and nails, inability to

lose weight?

The other veggies you're consuming would be a good thing, but remember that

cruciferous veggies inhibit the production of thyroxine. They include

cabbage, broccoli, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, kale.

Thyroid malfunction, especially low or hypo-function, can be the

underlying cause for a number of physical and emotional signs, symptoms, and

findings. Some things caused or worsened by thyroid dysfunction include:

Increased cholesterol

Decreased white blood cell count

Suppressed Immune System function

Decreased blood sugar

Excess adrenaline production

Increased cortisol production

Increased or decreased blood pressure

Symptoms of Hypothyroidism include:

-Acne

-Agitation

-Allergies

-Asthma

-Apathy

-Athlete¹s foot

-Bladder disorders

-Blurred vision

-Boils

-Brittle, splitting nails (transverse ridges in thumb especially)

I am in a group for digestive enzymes. When the product No-Fenol was

introduced last spring (from www.houstonni.com), a number of people

commented that their children's skin was no longer orangy looking.

No-Fenol was designed to help some people process phenols in fruits

and vegetables (these kids would have a bad reaction to these foods

and this allows them to eat fresh fruits, vegetables, and a few

other things). But we did not know why this would be except that it

process the beta-carotene or something better. I am having trouble

following that very complicated thyroids, liver function, etc

issues. Is this related to detoxification of the body in general?

Can some one help me out here? Any one got a clue how this is

connected to taking a digestive enzymes (contains mostly xylanase

and cellulase).

Karen.

Hi, i/ve been following this post, am also taking lugols - since about 2

weeks ago, i've muscle tested for it and on that basis am taking 10

drops a day on the skin. Ive had many many hypo symptoms for decades. Of

course these tests are not 100 percent reliable for sure, anyway i am

wondering how long it should take to feel some results. Thanks in

advance and happy new year.. scarlett
