as you were forced to work

in these concentration camps

This was not so long ago.

and the burning pain not so far away

rather closer to my mind

every time

I remember standing by

my kitchen sink

taking in my hands

the fourteen pills

of HIV chemotherapy

called Epivir, Zerit, Videx, Ziagen,

Agenerase, Norvir, Viracept, Ritonavir

Retrovir, and Combivir

Instead feel the burning

 

The oven is inside your body

heat rising from the falling bombs

- numbness, tingling and pain in your hands or feet (peripheral

neuropathy)

- rash

- upset stomach (nausea) and vomiting

- abdominal pain

- muscle aches and pain (myalgia)

- abnormal liver function tests (increased liver enzymes)

- rare cases of inflammation or swelling of the pancreas with

abdominal pain (pancreatitis)

 

 

Risks of Didanosine (ddI, Videx) A registered trademark

 

- inflammation or swelling of the pancrease with abdominal pain

(pancreatitis) which may cause death

- changes in the eye that may lead to visual changes (retinal

changes)

- diarrhea

- numbness, tingling, and pain in your hands or feet (peripheral

neuropathy)

- upset stomach (nausea) and vomiting

- increase in uric acid in the blood stream

- abnormal liver function tests (increased liver enzymes)

- when didanosine (ddI) is used in combination with other medicines

with similar side effects, these side effects may be seen more often, and may be

more severe, than with didanosine is used alone. People who take didanosine

together with stavudine (d4T), with or without hydroxyurea, may have a greater

risk of developing pancreatitis and increased liver enzymes. People who take

didanosine with stavudine may also have a greater risk of developing peripheral

neuropath.

 

 

Risks of Abacavir (ABC, 1592U89, Ziagen) A registered trademark

 

the following side effects have been associated with the use of

abacavir:

- an allergic reaction that may include multiple symptoms, such as:

skin rash, fever, feeling tired (fatigued), nausea, vomiting, diarrhea,

abdominal pain, cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, achiness, or a general

feeling of illness. These symptoms usually appear within the first six weeks

after starting this drug but can occur at any time during the treatment. This

reaction can be severe and could lead to death if abacavir is not stopped. The

severe form of allergic reaction can also reoccur upon drug rechallenge and

could even lead to death. Severe or fatal allergic-type reactions can occur

within hours after abacavir is restarted in patients who have interrupted

abacavir therapy for any reason. Allergic-type reactions to abacavir can occur

in pationts who have no prior identified history of allergic-type reaction or

whose symptoms were previously unrecognized.

 

If you Discontinue Abacavir for any reason or think you might be

developing an allergic reaction to abacavir do not take any more doses and

contact the doctor at this site immediately.

 

Other side effects include

- upset stomach (nausea)

- vomiting

- vague overall feeling of discomfort (malaise)

- felling tired (fatigue)

- decrease in appetite (anorexia)

- diarrhea

- Inflamation of the pancreas (pancreatitis [symptoms are nausea,

vomiting, & abdominal pain])

- Headache

- Increased triglycerides (fatty acids in the blood)

 

Risks of Nucleosides (ZDV, 3TC, ddI, and abacavir)

 

NOTE: The following applies to 3TC, ddI, d4T, and abacavir discussed

above.

Lactic acidosis (excess acid in the blood) and severe hepatomegaly

(enlarged liver) with steatosis (fatty liver) that may result in liver failure,

other complications, and death have been reported with the use of antiretroviral

nucleoside analogues alone or in combination, including drugs such as ZDV, ddI,

d4T, ddC, 3TC and abacavir.

 

 

Risks of Amprenavir (APV, 141W94, Agenerase) A registered trademark

 

The following side effects have been associated with the use of

aprenavir:

- upset stomach (nausea)

- vomiting

- diarrhea

- rash*

- numbness, tingling around the mouth (perioral paresthesias)

- abdominal pain

- gas (flatulence)

- depression or mood changes

 

*Any rash should immediately be brought to the attention of your

study doctor, no matter how long you have been receiving study treatment. Signs

or symptoms of sever or potentially life-threatening skin reations are rare with

amprenavir. Patients developing severe skin reactions should discontinue

amprenavir as soon as possible.

 

Risks of Ritonavir (RTV, Norvir) A registered trademark

 

The following side effects have been associated with the use of

ritonavir:

- gastrointestinal disturbances, especially including: upset stomach

(nausea)

vomiting

diarrhea

- an increase in the amount of fatty acid in the blood

(hypertriglycerdemai)

- numbness and tingling in the arms, legs, and around the mouth

(paresthesias - peripheral and circumoral)

- rash

- abnormal liver function test (elevated liver enzymes)

- fever

- bad taste or change in taste (taste perversion)

- abdominal pain

 

Risks of Nelfinavir (NFV, Viracept) A registered trademark

 

- diarrhea

- abdominal pain

- upset stomach (nausea)

- gas (flatulence)

- lack of energy (asthenia)

- rash

- decrease in the number of white blood cells that help fight

infection (neutropenia)

- abnormal liver function test (elevated liver enzymes)

- elevated muscle enzyme test (elevated creatine phosphokinase)

 

NOTE: The following applies to APV/RTV and NFV

 

The use of potent antiretroviral drug combinations (which commonly

include protease inhibitor) may be related to an abnormal distribution

(placement) of body fat and wasting. Some of the body changes that have been

seen include:

- increase in fat around the waist and stomach area

- increase in fat on the back of the neck

- thinning of the face, legs, and arms

- breast enlargement

 

The use of potent antiretroviral drug combinations (which commonly

include protease inhibitor) may be related to fat metabolism including elevated

triglycerides (fatty acid in the blood) and/or elevated cholesterol.

 

The use of protease inhibitors may be related to the development of

or the worsening of increase blood sugar and diabetes.

 

There have been reports of increase bleeding in HIV-infected persons

with hemophilia (a bleeding disorder) who were treated with some protease

inhibitors. It is not known if protease inhibitors were the cause of these

bleeding episodes.
