The *Facts* - by John Lee M.D. JoAnn Guest Mar 19, 2003 10:28 PST " Facts "

that conventional medicine projects about women... bone loss

leading to Osteoporosis, heart problems,.

CM (Conventional Medicine) believes that low endogenous estrogen

after menopause is the cause of osteoporosis. The evidence is that

tow-thirds of postmenopausal women produce sufficient endogenous

estrogen for optimal estrogen bone benefit!

CM teaches that Fosamax is a good treatment for osteoporosis. The

evidence is that Fosamax is less effective in treating osteoporosis

and has more side effects.

CM teaches that there is no human or animal evidence that

progesterone builds bone. The evidence is tht progesterone promotes

new bone formation and that phytoestrogen delays bone loss!

CM believes that testosterone causes prostate cancer. The

evidence is that estradiol causes prostate cancer, and opinion shared

by the NCI. Also testosterone is converted into dihydrotestosterone

(DHT) by the action of 5 x-reductase, an enzyme normally inhibited by

progesterone. As testosterone levels fall, estradiol effect

increases. Estradiol promotes the oncogene, Bcl-2, whereas

progesterone promotes the protective gene, p53.

CM beleives that tamoxifen has been proven to prevent breast

cancer. the evidence is that breast cancer recurrence or incidence is

unchanged by tamoxifen!

CM believes that pregnance and lactation increase the need for

calcium supplementation. The evidence is that pregnancey and

lactation do result in some calcium depletion in bone but this is

quickly reversed back to pre-pregnancy levels regardless of calcium

supplementation.

CM has totally ignored progesterone, especially in relation to

prevention of atherosclerosis and coronary artery disease. The

evidence is that progesterone protects against coronary artery spasm

whereas medroxyprogesterone acetate (Provera) does not! New evidence

also shows that progesterone inhibits cholesteryl ester synthesis in

macrophages and blocks it enhancement by glucocorticoids.

CM believes that HRT( estrogen plus Provera protects against

coronary heart disease. The evidence from a double blind, placebo

controlled, randomized study is that there is no difference in

coronary heart disease in postmenopausal women on HRT compared to

placebo!

CM believes that estrogen levels fall gradually as women approach

menopause. The evidence is that estrogen levels during the

perimenopaus become more variable but do not decline.

CM believes that low endogenous estrogen after menopause is the

cause of osteoporosis. the evidence is that two-thirds of

postmenopausal women produce sufficient endogenous estrogen for

optimal estrogen bone benefit!

CM teaches that there is no evidence that estrogen dominance

causes breast or any cancer. The evidence is that it does!

CM beleives that the presence of progesterone receptors (PR+) in

breast cancer cells is a contraindication for progesterone

supplementation. The evidence is that PRs are produced by estrogen

and that the effect of progesterone is to prevent breast cells from

becoming cancer cells. The more PRs found, the greater was the

estrogen domionance, and the greater the need for MORE progesterone!

Conventional Medicine believes all sorts of things which are

neither true nor evidence-based! It is hypocrisy to claim otherwise.

Further, the entire concept of evidence-based medicine in the manner

being proposed (i.e., only by double blind, placebo controlled

randomized studies) is at its core, irrational! The complex dynamics

of health and cell life are so heterogeneous that single factor

testing is inherently misleading. Evidence is not a " thing " , it si an

interpretation of observations! The fact that dead smelts washed up

on a beach correlates very strongly with an abundance of seagulls in

the area is not evidence that the seagulls caused the smelts to die

an wash up on the beach! Interpretation is the result of one's

knowledge of underlying connections! Conventional Medicine does not

have a monopoly on interpretation! Alternative explanations of

biological circumstances must be judges on their own merits, not by

their conformance with established convention!
