WHAT DOCTORS DON’T TELL YOU - E-NEWS BROADCAST No.30 - 10 Apr 03

Please feel free to email this broadcast to any friends you feel would

appreciate receiving it.

VACCINATIONS: It’s human rights, stupid

Last week we reported on a case where a mother was being forced by a court order

to vaccinate her daughter. Needless to say, it attracted an enormous response

from you, but almost to a man (and woman) you wanted to know names etc. in order

to mount an effective protest.

Enews has this week discovered that she has an injunction against her that

prevents her from speaking to the press (it’s supposedly in place to protect her

daughter).

The judgement that forces her to vaccinate her child is currently in draft form,

and it will be finally made at Winchester High Court within the next three

weeks. Thereafter she will have two weeks to appeal against the judgement.

The case has already cost the taxpayer £250,000 (both parties are on legal aid)

and this bill will continue to mount as the appeals process starts.

So what can you do? Write to your local MP as the judgement is a clear breach

of human rights legislation, and especially do so if you happen to live in the

Bournemouth area. That’s where the woman herself lives and it would be great if

your local MP could take up the case.

And if you do live in the region, please turn up on the day at Winchester High

Court when the judgement will be made. It will be a public hearing, so some of

you will be admitted to the public gallery. We reckon it’s going to be heard

between April 22 and 30, but she will only get two to three days notice of the

date. As soon as she knows, we’ll pass on the date.

RE COIL: The IUD may protect against cancer

At a time when there’s a new scare about the cancer risks of the contraceptive

pill, it’s heartening to hear that another contraceptive device—the IUD, or

coil—might have a protective effect.

Researchers believe the coil may reduce the risk of endometrial cancer, although

they’re not sure why this should be. Perhaps the inflammation caused by the

coil might kill off cancer cells, or it could be because the endometrium is shed

each time, they surmise.

Whatever the reason, the research team from St Louis University found the coil

offered some protection when they compared the lifestyles of 128 women with

endometrial cancer against 255 healthy women.

Interestingly, they found that the contraceptive pill also offered some

protection, but less than the coil.

If the pill is a protective agent against endometrial cancer, it doubles your

risk of cervical cancer if you have taken it continuously for 10 years, a World

Health Organization study has concluded.

IT’S NOT FOR LIFE: Preterms can catch up with the rest of them

Preterm babies with very low birth weights display a range of developmental

disabilities during the first couple of years of life.

Even at age eight, one-fifth will have major cognitive problems, half require

individual assistance in the classroom, and 20 per cent are in special

education.

But it’s a legacy that diminishes with time. By the time preterm children reach

the age of 14 or 15 years, nearly three-quarters of them graduate from high

school in America, and more than 40 per cent are enrolled in college programmes.

It’s a shift that is endorsed by a new study of preterm, and low birth weight,

children which proves that they show a continuing improvement in verbal and IQ

test scores over time. Only those that also suffered significant central

nervous system injury at birth failed to show progress.

IT’S A DOG’S LIFE: It’s not just children we vaccinate too often

There’s been plenty of debate about childhood vaccinations, but what about the

shots we give to the family dog?

The poor mutt can be in line for 16 different vaccines a year, although they’re

often given in one shot. They are supposed to offer protection against rabies,

and various canine viral infections, along with other, milder, conditions such

as Lyme disease.

But, as with our children, dogs can also develop side effects, such as skin

rash, allergic reactions and autoimmune diseases. Cats that have been

vaccinated have suffered even worse reactions, including the development of

malignant tumours.

So are we vaccinating our pets too often and with too much? Canine vaccine

experts in America believe that we are. Like humans, dogs could be vaccinated

at an early age and be protected for life, instead of being given annual

‘top-up’ shots, they say. At the very least, the core vaccines, including

rabies, should not be given more than once every three years.

READERS’ CORNER

Tasty vitamins: We know that nutrition comes a poor second after

pharmaceuticals in our doctors’ war chests. So it was with some surprise to one

Enews reader that her doctor agreed to a prescription of a high dose vitamin C

supplement to help treat her bone density. Even better, the supplements had a

very pleasant flavour when she chewed them. So pleasant, in fact, that she

checked the label and found they contained sorbitol and aspartame. Nice to know

that nutritional care will be in safe hands once the EU directives are passed.
