Q: I thought all NATURAL vitamins are KOSHER.

However recently I was told that many so called all Natural vitamins

have non-kosher ingredients. WHY DO VITAMINS HAVE TO BE KOSHER?

A: One must be very careful when purchasing vitamins. Even Vitamins

that list so called " all natural ingredients " have been found to

contain non-kosher binders like animal fats.

Binders are certain ingredients that bind together all the ingredients

that go into making the Vitamin Tablet.

Sometimes these binders contain non-kosher

steroids and the manufacturer is not required to list these binders

in the ingredients.

Many times binders may contain fish derivatives.

For example many A & D vitamins may contain non-kosher fish

derivatives.

Calcium may contain non-kosher calcium derivatives from

bones or oyster shells. Liver may contain non-kosher liver. Some

vitamins contain non-kosher wine derivatives in there ingredients.

Of course they all may be " natural " however natural does not necessarily

mean KOSHER. That is why it is so important to make sure the vitamin

that you buy has the proper Kosher Supervision.

Q: My five year old is constantly suffering from ear infections. The

doctor is always prescribing antibiotics however as soon as I stop

the medication the ear infection returns. What do you recommend I do?

A: Garlic Extract has been shown to enhance the immune system. After

a three week period of garlic intake, Kandil (1989) who did a study

found that Garlic Extract was effective at enhancing killer cell

activity. Garlic a natural antibiotic has been shown to protect from

infections.

Q: I am under so much stress, I cant seem to calm down. Most of the

time I am depressed.. I really don't want to take tranquilizers. Is

there anything for my nerves?

A: B-Complex aids in the normal function of the nervous system. Also

an excellent herb to try is Saint-Johns Wort. This herb is a very

popular antidepressant. Last year an article in the British Medical

Journal summarized 23 studies on the herb. It was found that St Johns

Wort had fewer side effects then drugs. And that 80% of patients felt

better or were symptom free after four weeks.

Q: As a woman in my 40's I am having problems with my monthly cycle.

Do you have anything natural without hormones that will straighten

out my cycle?

A: Bioflavonoids and Vitamin C have been know to contribute to the

proper functioning of the internal system. It has been shown that

Bioflavonoids and Vitamin C aid in controlling bleeding and healing.

Q: I am a 65-year-old young grandfather and am always forgetting

things. What do you suggest to give my memory a boost? I have been to

a doctor and he says it is the normal process of aging?

A: The best-studied and most popular herb is Gingko. It has been

shown to improve memory loss and brain function. Numerous well-

controlled studies have shown Gingko can improve blood flow in the

brain and the extremities and alleviate vertigo and ringing in the

ears. You may have to use Gingko for six weeks before seeing results.

If you have memory loss it may be worth a try.

Q: I am constantly catching colds, virus's etc. Is there a

combination vitamin I can take to boost my immune system?

A: The herb Echinacea boosts the immune system and has been shown to

fight off colds, flu and urinary tract infections. However Echinacea

is not to be taken on a steady or prolonged basis.

Q: I hear that there is a vitamin that prevents two major birth

defects in new born babies. Can you tell me the name of the vitamin

and how much to take?

A: The vitamin that is attracting attention is Folic Acid. This B

Vitamin appears to guard against two of the most common and

devastating neurological defects afflicting newborns in the U.S. :

spina bifida and anencephaly in which the brain fails to develop

fully. Researchers found that women who in there reproductive years

took .008 mg. Of Folic Acid per day there chances of having children

with these severe birth defects fell sharply. The Health Dept. now

recommends that all women take Folic Acid Daily in there child

productive years.
