Think of this word. It’s the queasy feeling in the pit of the stomach. The free-floating anxiety that is nameless. Fear leaves us off-kilter. Even emotionally paralyzed to focus on the things we really want to do with our lives. Fear created and reinforced by our culture. Dig deep and I’m sure you’ll come up with a long list of fear triggers. What does it take for you to feel the paralyzing power of fear? Consider how fear sneaks into our lives. Even in the form of a new lady’s jacket referred to in military-speak as Exo-Electric Armor. This $1,000 jacket administers an 80,000 volt electric shock to anyone who touches the wearer. It lets loose the high voltage when a lock is opened in the sleeve and a button is depressed, allowing the electric charge to build up. The jacket’s makers suggest that women charge it up when they feel threatened or vulnerable. Something is wrong here. When you read the statistics, you learn that most women who suffer from violence are abused by people they know, not by strangers. So it is unlikely that a woman would be able, at a moment’s notice, to jump into her jacket, unlock the sleeve and get it charged up during a domestic quarrel. Unless, of course, she wears the jacket and keeps it charged whenever her likely abuser is around. Does this make any sense to you? This product and the sham marketing draws on the paralyzing power of fear. The health industry also draws on that power. A drug company creates the " profile " of a cause of illness, spreads the word about it to media (who are only too happy to oblige with stories), and then strongly promotes a drug to combat the cause of the health problem to be feared. For instance, many of the over-the-top, questionable ad campaigns for controversial cholesterol-lowering drugs tug at the strings of fear. The fear of having a heart attack. Patterns of fear that creep into our lives are often hard to shake. They begin early. As a child, I was very fearful. I slept squeezed into the middle of my bed, because I thought I saw hands creeping up over the bedcovers. I hated to go to school in the early grades, because I felt I couldn’t learn as well as the other kids did. Nor could I negotiate the playground games with ease. The teacher’s writing on the board at school seemed indecipherable to me. I was puzzled by how easily others seemed to understand what she wanted from the class. I was a sensitive soul who had a gift for singing, loving, and ….I also had a huge, unmet need for glasses. When I did finally did get glasses, a new world opened up to me. Reality had edges and clarity. My awkwardness in sports slipped away; I could see the ball in order to catch it. And many of my fears, too, seemed to melt magically away. Looking back, it is not a far reach for me to connect, at least partially, my childhood experience of new-found vision to my early-blooming quest for a deeper, more truth-based knowledge of life. And…you know…I just didn’t want to suffer any more unnecessary fear. Fear shuts down communication. It closes minds. It silences dissenting voices. It causes violence. It makes humans ill. Take off the blinders and look hard and deep at fear and root out the " fear programs " that have been planted. When you " put on the glasses, " the world looks different. *** SHOCKING NEW JACKET HITS THE STREETS Gettingwell- / Vitamins, Herbs, Aminos, etc. To , e-mail to: Gettingwell- Or, go to our group site: Gettingwell Free online calendar with sync to Outlook.
