The part about blood pH. I do not contest that people with cancer tend to have a low blood pH. But is the low pH a cause of the cancer, or just a symptom? As I have stated many times on this list, I am a very strong advocate of taking large amounts of ascorbic acid per day. Others have stated that taking large amounts of ascorbic acid will lower blood pH. No way for me to prove this, but I am willing to bet my life that increased ascorbic acid intake is a cancer preventative, rather than a dangerous habit which will lead to cancer because it lowers my blood pH. Of course, I am no doctor, and not a medical researcher either. But it seems to me that linking lowered blood pH in people who do not suffer from cancer is just as erroneous as using blood cholesterol levels as a marker for possible other diseases. Alobar Alobar, Very good reasoning! I would start by saying that in my opinion, not any of us really know what causes cancer. Everyone I talk to offers varying opinions. One health food store manager said at one time that cancer was initially caused by red meat, preservatives and constipation and the list goes on. I would guess that he is right to a certain extent although it isn't nearly that simplistic in my mind. Cancer growth usually takes about ten years to even surface into a visible growth. During this time there are a lot of changes going on in the body, one of the most important of which is the breakdown of the immune system as the author pointed out. When the immune system is intact existing cancer cells are immediately annihilated. That's the bottom line. We need to keep our immune systems up and running with a good organic diet and optimal supplementation in order to avoid abnormal breakdown of cell membranes. Cancer is basically the abnormal growth of cells, in any part of the body. We all know that vitamin C aids in the formation of healthy collagen. As you mentioned earlier, just as with fats and cholesterol, I believe we need to consider the source! All fats are not created equal. There are good fats and bad fats to consider. The bad fats are not even in the same ballpark as the good fats. As a matter of fact, there are fats that help lower cholesterol levels. They are called monounsaturated fats and are present mainly in extra virgin oils such as olive oil. .. although fruits and some vegetables are acidic in nature (some of them more so than others), the fresh fruits and vegetables become alkaline when digested. I believe that vitamin C when ingested, being the natural substance that it is, reacts in a similar way. In my opinion, the arachadonic acids in dairy pose more of a problem than natural substances in balancing our PH. This is where we need to consider eating more alkaline foods if our PH balance is off a little. Celery and asparagus are a few of the more alkaline foods. Drinking larger amounts of water each day also helps to alkalize the body. The majority of cancer patients simply do not have a healthy lifestyle, have partaken of refined foods for years on end, are plagued with a fatty liver or worse, and as a rule are extremely acidic. All of the cancer patients who were tested were found to have high acidity, however this does not mean that acidity caused the cancer to develop initially. Interestingly enough, lemons and other citrus that are considered acidic are in actuality a low-level acidic fruit. Many of our fruits and vegetables are included in this category. There are few exceptions according to James F. Balch, MD. Plums, prunes and cranberries do not oxidize and therefore remain acidic in the body.Essentiallly, we should be careful to maintain the correct PH balance because acidosis is a factor in cancer. Whether or not it causes cancer is cause for debate. The fact remains, acidity is toxic! Acidosis is problematic in many illnesses, for the simple reason that the correct PH is the only`environment' in which your cells work to their maximum benefit! Many of us are extremely acidic from decades of eating processed foods, high in sodium, sugar, dairy, red meat. We should strive to achieve more of a balance in our daily diets. Acidosis is a condition in which our body chemistry becomes imbalanced and overly acidic. Symptoms associated with acidosis include insomnia, water retention, rheumatoid arthritis, migraine headaches, abnormally low blood pressure, dry hard stools, foul-smelling stools accompanied by a burning sensation, alternating constipation and diarrhea, difficulty swallowing, burning in the mouth and under the tongue, sensitivity of the teeth to vinegar and acidic fruits, bumps on the tongue and or the roof of the mouth.Acidity and alkalinity are measured by according to the pH (potential of hydrogen) scale. Water, with a pH of 7.0 is considered neutral –neither acid nor alkaline. Acidosis occurs when the body loses its alkaline reserves. Some causes of acidosis include kidney, liver and adrenal disorders, improper diet, malnutrition, ketosis (caused by high- protein diets such as the Adkins diet over the long term) Anger, stress, fear, anorexia, toxemia, fever, and the consumption of EXCESSIVE AMOUNTS OF NIACIN OR ASPIRIN. Diabetics often suffer with this condition. Stomach ulcers are often associated with this condition also.Since excess vitamin C may lead to acidosis, reduce your intake of vitamin C for a short period of time. Gradually increase your intake after correcting the imbalance. Resume with buffered forms of vitamin C which are non-acidic. Sulphur acts as a buffer to maintain pH. Sulfur can be taken in supplement form. Use elder bark, hops and willow. They are excellent for acidosis. Start with small amounts of fresh fruits and gradually add larger amounts as your pH improves. Drink potato broth everyday. Avoid animal protein especially beef and pork, and processed or junk foods, and reduce your intake of cooked foods. When ingested, cooked and processed foods become acidic in the body. Avoid cereals, crackers, fried foods, macaroni and sugar and foods with hydrognated fats and oils. James A Balch, M.D. in " Prescription for Nutritional Healing. " One of the very first things I attempted to achieve was to bring back the correct pH balance to my body. It is amazing how much better one feels after doing this!
