Guest guest
Hi Helen, Boy they did a number on you!!! From what I have read about gastroparesis and vagotomy I would say that you would probably be best off giving Doc a call. However, I did copy this from a site. Treatment First, if there is an underlying disorder, it needs to be treated effectively. Examples are good blood sugar control in the diabetic patient or thyroid medicine for someone with an underactive thyroid. Second, there may be a need to address diet and nutrition. When gastroparesis is mild, there are usually few food problems. However, if there is marked delay in stomach emptying, then attention to the diet is necessary. Fats, including vegetable oils, normally cause delay in emptying of the stomach, so foods that are high in fat need to be avoided. High fiber foods such as broccoli and cabbage tend to stay in the stomach, so these foods should be restricted when symptoms are severe. Liquids always leave the stomach faster than solid food so liquid type foods such as low-fat milkshakes should be used. Finally, frequent small feedings, 4-6 times a day, are usually more effective than larger meals, 2 or 3 times a day. A registered dietitian can be very helpful in providing advice in severe cases. For the liquid type foods I would suggest fresh juiced fruits or vegetables. Stay away from carbo's, fats and meats. They are way too hard to digest. Also stay away from dairy. There are a lot of herbs which will stimulate the digestion. However, if your vagus nerve has been cut then digestive stimulants may not work too well. Therefore, I suggest you call Doc. Also consider doing lots of juices and juicy fruits and vegetables. Sorry I can't be of more help here. I know Doc will be able to assist you if no one else can. Years ago I had my common bile duct replaced by using a portion of the intestines. During this surgery, they either ACCIDENTALLY did a vagotomy or a planned it without my knowledge. Regardless, thirty years later I am miserable. I had a GI scope done and after 16 hours of fasting my stomach still contained a large amount of food. I have also had gastro emptying tests and they also prove my stomach is extremely slow. This condition has also created slowness in the intestinal tract. Help . . . I am on a list of a local hospital to call when they have experimental drugs to see if it helps. I do it because I hope for a miracle. Any suggestions? =Helen

For years I have bouts with severe hypoglycemia which means I really need the protein. I finally settled on a low carb high protein diet. At least I seem to have FEWER problems with this WOE. Guest guest
Hi Helen, No you are not doomed. But you will be if you wish to think you are. Get optimistic. Yeah I know, easy for me to say cause I am not wearing your shoes right now. However, start educating yourself on your condition thoroughly. Then start educating yourself thoroughly on diet, herbs, homeopathy, aromatherapy, etc. Find out all you can that will assist your condition. Remember nothing is impossible unless you believe it to be. I believe that you can live a full and quite happy life if you so desire. Granted, you will have to make some serious life style changes but I believe that you will be much better for them. You can look and hope for a miracle or start creating your own miracle. Guest guest
Don - I really know all of that . . . I have had this condition at its worse for over 10 years. I have read everything and tried herbal remedies others have suggested. I have joined support groups that search the east and the west for new sources of help for gastroparesis and of yet none have been successful. My reg physician told me my REAL problem is the vagotomy. It is one thing to try to restore health to nerves that have just gotten "lazy" and another to nerves that have been severed. HOWEVER, I honestly have not given up. That is why I ask here . . . hoping someone has an answer. I have really good days and I think they are good because I have not let this condition destroy me. I continue to enjoy life . . . the past week has just been one of those weeks where I am VERY MUCH aware of the condition. Thank you for your words. I know you are correct and I believe somewhere is an answer. -Helen - Don Quai herbal remedies Wednesday, June 04, 2003 12:55 AM Re: [herbal remedies] Need some help Hi Helen, No you are not doomed. Guest guest
Hi hon: Maybe it would be a good idea to seek another opinion of what is happening to his incision. Third round of antibiotics is cause for concern, as far as I'm concerned. Just my opinion here. Guest guest
Hi, I've gone thru something similar when I had an infected lump on my side...it eventually got really huge and painful...I also was on antibiotics for about a month..not the greatest! Anyways, the fluid in the lump eventually found its way to the surface of my skin and drained...I was left with a pencil sized hole on my side. I too covered it up and kept it clean as a whistle but it wouldn't heal. Eventually I decided that when I wasn't at work I would leave the wound uncovered and it ended up drying out and closing up. I just had to be very careful that no fuzz from my clothes or anything got in there. Now I'm sure the incision on your son's foot is probably deeper than what I experienced but it probably wouldn't hurt to get a second opinion. Hope he feels better soon =0) -Christina - ninny52348 Friday, April 01, 2005 8:13 PM Need Some Help Hi All.....I am here to ask if anyone knows anything that will help with an incision that keeps draining and won't heal. My son had a ganglion cyst surgically removed 3 weeks ago. It was doing great for the first 10 days then he said he felt like fluid was running down into his foot when he lowered his foot and it hurt terribly. The doctor said it was trapped fluid and that it would take time for it to dry up..he then removed the stitches and guess what...the incision is where the trapped fluid started draining from and the incision is gapping open.. it looks like an open wound. We have been putting hydrogen peroxide on it 2 times a day then put on a couple of butterfly bandages to try and hold the incision together, then a gauze pad on top of those and then wrapping it in an ace bandage. (orders of the doctor) The doctor put him in some kind of boot contraption yesterday so he ankle will be immobile. I personally think it needs some air to help dry it out so it can heal and it can't do that with all this wrapping on it. Sorry for going on and on but I am NOT very happy with this doctor right now and if it isn't better by Tues or Wed, I am going to try and get him an appt with another doctor. I tried to clean it out this evening with gauze and hydrogen peroxide. Any ideas on how to get this wound to heal would be greatly appreciated. Oh yeah, he is on his 3rd round of antibiotics. Guest guest
Thanks Christina...tonight I am going to have him soak it in an Epsom Salts bath then clean it using a wound cleaner a pharmacist recommended and then cover it with a thin gauze to absorb the drainage and yet it can get some air. ...I don't see how it would ever heal being covered and wrapped as much as it is now...I'll let ya know.
