Society is witnessing an increasing incidence of illnesses with neuropsychiatric manifestations. Prominent examples include autism and learning disorders in children, depression and chronic fatigue syndrome in adults and neurodegenerative diseases in the elderly. Although clinically diverse, all of these illnesses could be contributed to by infectious agents. The progressive occurrence of chronic complex disease conditions among members of a family is consistent with an underlying infectious illness that is not being addressed by either medical practitioners or the Public Health Service. " The performance of diagnostic stealth virus cultures was prohibited by the Federal Government in late 2002 on questionable grounds. " " Efforts to develop clinical assays for ACE-pigments and for stealth virus infected bacteria were also stymied by Federal Regulations. These actions have delayed progress in addressing an important Public Health issue. " Dr. Martin's contacts with CDC Dr. Martin has tried repeatedly to have CDC address the issue of a potential infectious component of the growing “epidemics” of illnesses affecting many Americans. He notified CDC of his findings as early as 1992. A proposal for funding submitted in 1995 was rejected. Several Abstracts submitted to CDC sponsored meetings were rejected. Presentations at other meetings were ineffective at evoking CDC's interests. An e-mail that Dr. Martin sent in August 2000 to Dr. Phil Pellett (http://www.rhinoed.com/john's_questions___.htm), then Head of CDC Herpes Virus Branch, is illustrative of these efforts. CDC also played a hand in the CLIA denying the right of Dr. Martin to test patients for Stealth adapted viruses (see correspondence with CLIA -http://www.rhinoed.com/john's_questions___.htm). I t was quite possibly involved in suppressing the publication of a manuscript entitled “DNA Sequence Analysis of a Stealth-Adapted Simian Cytomegalovirus” in the Proceedings of an October 2002 Institute of Medicine Meeting entitled “ Linking Infectious Agents and Chronic Diseases: Defining the Relationship, Enhancing the Research, and Mitigating the Effects.” In spite of these setbacks, Dr. Martin still believes the Nation needs the resources of CDC (annual budget of nearly $7,000,000,000) to effectively address the ongoing epidemics of stealth virus associated diseases. Stealth-adaptation refers to the ability of a conventional cytopathic (cell damaging) virus to lose portions of its viral genome that includes genes coding for components normally recognized by the cellular immune system. Although not widely appreciated among most virologists, only a relatively few number of virus coded components provide the target antigens for the vast majority of anti-viral cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL). Deletion of these few select genes can essentially enable a virus to avoid effective immune recognition. Cells from the virus culture of the initial culture positive CFS patient were inoculated into cats. The cats experienced profound behavioral changes. 11 Within a week they transformed from friendly, frisky happy-go-lucky favorites of the University animal facility, to frightened, reclusive animals shying away from the light. Several of the cats developed bald areas of skin upon their heads and necks from rubbing against the cage. Some had exudates from their nose from scratching. Gentle handling of the animals revealed painful muscles and enlarged lymph nodes. The acute illness peaked at 1-2 weeks with significant clinical recovery seen in the animals maintained from 5-16 weeks post inoculation. Necropsy showed widespread non-inflammatory vacuolating cellular changes. Heat killed virus did not induce disease, and in fact, provided protection against subsequent inoculations of the same virus. The animal became ill when inoculated with a virus isolated from a different patient who had been diagnosed with systemic lupus erythematosus. Animals of patients were also reported to show various symptoms, and yielded positive cultures when blood samples were tested. Blood samples from ill cats were inoculated into healthy cats that subsequently became ill and virus culture positive. One such outbreak occurred in the Mohave Valley region of Western Arizona in the spring of 1996. 20 Over 100 patients presented during a three month period with an acute gastrointestinal syndrome, followed by persisting fatigue, cognitive dysfunction and personality changes. Since then the community has experienced widespread chronic illnesses, including heightened allergies, chemical sensitivities especially to pesticides, higher than expected learning disorders among its children, and a high incidence of both depression and psychosis. Stealth virus cultures from these patients were consistently positive and distinguishable from control cultures in both routine and in double blinded independent studies. The clinician overseeing many of these cases encountered at least 10 fatalities among symptomatic, virus-culture positive, middle-aged individuals. He also referred a child with a slowly evolving behavioral and learning disorder. 21 An organic component was finally recognized by his parents, both of whom were physicians. In spite of an essentially normal clinical neurological examination, an MRI showed extensive sub-cortical T1 and T2 abnormalities. A brain biopsy showed the characteristic foamy vacuolating changes seen in other patients and in stealth virus inoculated cats. Mitochondria damage and intracellular inclusions were also evident. Both the mother and her son were culture positive. The child showed a significant response to ganciclovir (an anti-herpesvirus drug). The infecting virus could not be identified as a derivative of SCMV using a PCR based assay. This virus was also deposited with the American Type Culture Collection (Accession number VR-2568). Other community wide outbreaks of stealth-adapted viruses have been partially investigated and include Joelton , TN and Peoria , IL . As noted above, illnesses occurring within families also attest to the potential infectious nature of stealth-adapted viruses. Positive cultures and PCR based assays have also frequently been obtained from cancer patients including patients with salivary gland tumors, 22 breast cancers and multiple myeloma. DESCRIPTION: The BioPhysics Institute is the major scientific component of the S3Support Public Non-Profit Tax Exempt Foundation. S3Support embraces scientific, social and spiritual contributions from individual faculty members willing to share their expertise in a cooperative effort to enhance human wellbeing. It is primarily concerned with the growing prevalence of chronic debilitating illnesses; the apparent deterioration in the quality of food; or a desire that humans aspire to a higher understanding of their nature and existence. Research is conducted in both the Rosemead facility and on location by various faculty members. MISSION: To investigate, evaluate and apply concepts relating to the production and utilization of energy in biological systems. Observations relating to potential new forms of biologically active energies, mono-atomic and micro-clustered elements, alternative cellular energy pigments, and emerging concepts of nanotechnology, are potentially of immense clinical importance. They may well explain the success of various traditional healing methods as well as opening up entirely new approaches to healing illnesses and fortifying life. Specific application goals include optimization of health and retardation of the ageing process; energy induces destruction of microbes; elimination of cancer cells; energy mediated metabolic resuscitation of viral damaged tissues and improved crop production. In addition, the Institute is intent on specifically evaluating claims of efficacy for various energy-based therapeutic modalities including supplements and on reporting its findings via internet and public seminars. STRUCTURE and Philosophy: The BioPhysics Institute is structured so as to avoid the pitfalls of profit motivation, biased promotion of a selected competing product, inadequate scientific backing, and unwarranted protection of entrenched political or medical interests. It functions as a network of collegial individuals extending from basic physicists, self-trained highly creative thinkers, experts in both traditional and alternative healing arts, engineers, and suppliers of various products and devices. To encourage this free flow of information, faculty members are fully committed to neither disclose or to commercially use information received in confidence from another member. Rather, the intent is to establish cooperative group relationships with individuals pursuing similar goals and to use the collective wisdom and expertise of such groups to inform and guide the pursuits of other faculty members. Recognition by fellow faculty members of one's scientific accomplishments and one's commitment to the overall mission of the Institute is to be highly valued. Future faculty appointments will be made upon the unanimous approval of those faculty members with related interests and expertise. Departments will be organized around central themes with regular reporting of progress and requests for problem solving assistance. By working together, many of the obstacles commonly encountered by researchers pursuing controversial topics can be overcome. Moreover, valuable clinical observations using energy-based therapies can be subjected to formal clinical trials leading to licensure and more open and widespread usage. An integrated approach will achieve far more than the sum of separate individual efforts. While the Institute will clearly be prosperous for its members, the real beneficiary will be the vast number of patients who are currently inappropriately served by conventional medicine. The Institute will use its resources to foster research endeavors of its members and to provide a measure of financial security to those who have been willing to freely contribute their expertise and passion in a collaborative endeavor. Resources will also be used to provide educational materials on the Institute's web site, prepare major grant applications, and to encourage financial and other donations from members of the public who wish to become supporters. To make the case stronger, Dr. Martin would like to hear from other families in which multiple members have illnesses consistent with some type of infectious process. Brief statements should be sent to s3support with a telephone number for those families who would like to be contacted by Dr. Martin. With permission, selected case histories will be anomalously posted on the web site. Respondents will also be offered an opportunity to participate in IRB approved clinical trials. Please feel free to forward this request, along with the above article, to other internet sites. 1. Create a Movement to address the epidemic of brain damaging illnesses afflicting this country. 2.
