Guest guest
Good news for our side..... Cyndi Environmental Working Group - Bulletin EWG BULLETIN - JANUARY 2007 EPA Says 'No' to Carcinogen in Wood Preservative Last week, EWG celebrated our first victory of the year when the Environmental Protection Agency rejected a pesticide industry proposal to infuse wood for decks and playsets with the cancer-causing chemical chromium-6 in the wake of our petition to the Agency. It's an important win that will keep a potent carcinogen out of backyards and playgrounds across the country. This is the second cancer-causing compound we've kept out of America's backyards. In 2004 EWG's groundbreaking research on the risk of kids' exposure to arsenic-based wood preservatives convinced the EPA to ban its use in treated wood. Arsenic-laced wood remains in 70 million backyards across the country, and EWG provides simple safety tips for reducing childrens' exposures. Check out our ten safety steps to reduce your family's exposure to arsenic from pressure-treated wood. New Feature: Ask EWG Is there something more you'd like to know about toxics around your house or on your dinner plate? Starting in February, we're introducing a new feature called "Ask EWG." Each month, we will answer several of the best questions submitted by EWG Bulletin readers. Though we can't promise to personally answer every email, we'll do our best to keep it interesting and informative. Submit your questions here: www.ewg.org/askewg/ Introducing Mulch, a Blog About Food and Farm Policy We'd like to introduce you to Mulch, our new blog about food and agriculture policy, politics, science and culture. Written primarily by EWG President Ken Cook, Mulch will offer general agriculture news and musings as well as frequent updates about the 2007 Farm Bill. Although EWG has researched a wide range of issues, we may be best known for publishing the Farm Subsidy Database, with names of millions of federal farm subsidy recipients and the amount of taxpayer money they have collected. Though we update it regularly with new subsidy data and analyses, we've never offered a steady stream of commentary -- until now. We invite you to visit and join the discussion at www.mulchblog.com. While you're at it, if you're interested in more general news and our thoughts about public health and the environment, check out EWG's Enviroblog at www.enviroblog.org. Thanks For Your Support in 2006 We want to thank all of you who participated in our 2006 year-end fundraising drive. We'll put that support to good use in 2007, when we'll work with a more pro-environment Congress toward two main goals: 1) passing the Kids Safe Chemical Act, which will require industry to prove chemicals are safe for kids before they end up on store shelves; and 2) reforming agriculture policy via the 2007 Farm Bill to help family farmers take better care of the land while growing safe, healthy food. Arsenic Test Kits Did you know that large amounts of arsenic can leach out of treated wood for up to 15 years? Purchase one of our $20 test kits and find out if your backyard deck or playset poses a risk to children.
