organic coup & using coconut oil to fry

Where I live, there are no organic grocers or markets, save a few organic items at one of the chain grocery stores down the road that are marked way high. I saw in the sunday ad for a diff. chain grocery store here that they have begun to carry Wild Oats items. Though it's out of the way to get to this particular chain here, I'm going to venture forth in the name of organic food and check it out in the next couple of days. Hopefully this will pan out and keep us in organics til the CSA starts up in earnest during June. Must be nice to live somewhere you can have farmer's markets with fresh fruits/veggies more than 3 months a yr. sigh

Tonight I made fish. I usually bake or grill but we had an old fashioned fish fry instead this evening. I used coconut oil to cook the fish & a corn meal and gluten free flour mixture for the coating, without telling any of the kids. They didn't even notice any taste change and ate it up. I noticed that the fish didn't seem as greasy as fried fish can be when you use vegetable oil to cook and there was no grease taste to it. It was light and the delicate flavour of the flounder came through. This was the first time I used coconut oil this way. It did freak me out at first, because it foamed up while I was cooking in it.......all I could think about was Oh!....look at the rabid fish.lolol

I've decided to give making my own yogurt a try too. It looks pretty simple to do and the financial savings over spending 75 cents for those tiny containers in the store is a bonus. That, and I can control more what goes into it in terms of sweeteners and junk. The kids want it sweet but putting the sweetener in ourselves, we can make it less sweet than the commercial brands & get rid of the white sugar and HFCS.

You can also get many organic packaged/dry good items off

Amazon.com... free shipping if you order $25 or more (easy to do).

They have Wild Oat brand also. Many times you need to buy each item

in bulk, but we just stock the pantry & spread out the purchases.

Right now if you buy $40 worth of nutiva product (coconut oil), there

is a $10 instant rebate.

Yum, that founder sounds great!

LOL! Isn't it amazing what the family will eat when they don't know there is something "different"??? I LOVE homemade yogurt, it does taste different that store bought stuff, but once you get used to it, you'll never go back. Plus, if you're putting flavoring in it for the kids, they might not even notice the difference.

Did you get out to the grocery store yet? I can't wait to hear what you got, if anything.

I'm writing to you from Palm Springs! Visiting the inlaws......... ;-)Cyndi

Thanks Angela. I already do a fair amount of organic shopping on Amazon

too.

My usual grocery store has about 9 items in their organic produce......lol

They had some good sale prices on the WO stuff at the grocery store I went

to so I stocked up.

I also liked actually going into a store and finding the things instead of

having to see them online for a change, ya know? ;-)

thanks,

Sluggy

I did go last week. Stocked up on a few WO things plus I had some

coupons....;-)

I got the natural 'cheese curls'. After the initial look of disgust on the

kids face as they shoved a handful in their faces, they said they liked them

better than the chemical laden Cheetos they are use to.lol

I also picked up some organic produce, some chickens and ground bison, which

I've never seen for sale around here at the store.

I mixed the bison with ground beef on Sunday and made them burgers. They

never noticed the difference til I told them AFTER they ate and then it was

too late.lolol

How was the Springs? When you weren't having to hang with the In-laws, that

is....hehehe

That's my favorite part, telling the family AFTER they've eaten the meal, haha! I've started sneaking the pulp leftover from my juice machine into spaghetti sauce. It tastes GREAT. Noone can even tell, and I haven't told either, lol.

Palm Springs was great! SIL was extra nice and considerate this year, which was shocking, lol. It was so nice to go somewhere and have fun-the first trip I've had since I got cancer. Wish we could have stayed longer, lol.
