TreeHugger

tries to make sense of the American election

scene on this Super Tuesday, where some

states have caucuses, others have primaries,

so many are bunched together on one day, half

the country is voting but half the candidates

have dropped out already, and the election is

over half a year away. Weird. Who to vote for

today if you are voting for the environment?

We defer to our fellow bloggers at ::Grist, who have

a little list, a table from ::Plenty, and a

report card from Envirowonk.

OH, NO, MR. STINKYFISH! No doubt

TreeHugger readers will remember TreeHugger

Bonnie's criticism of the frivolous naming of

an embarrassed whale Mr. Splashypants

and the scandal that ensued. The World

Wildlife Fund learned that it was on to a

good thing and chose Mr. Stinkyfish as the

catchy name for the mascot for its campaign for

sustainable fishing. However, the fishing

companies and supermarkets went crazy because

they don't want any words evocative of slime

or smell to be associated with fish. They

forced the WWF to pull the campaign

because it was 'misguided and unfortunate: it

damages the industry'.

The new name: Mr. Super Fish. Hmmmm.

However the message is important: as

consumers we should look for the Marine Stewardship

Council label when buying

seafood so that we only buy fish which are

not threatened by overfishing. The ones to

look for include cod, plaice, swordfish,

monkfish and mackerel. . ::More

Sara Snow discusses "absence

labelling"- where states try to

ban the practice of labelling milk "hormone

free". She says it's not about the milk, but

about knowing what is going on around you and

knowing that you can effect change.

Bagging Milk

Who knew that cold milk was such a hot topic?

In some parts of the world milk comes

standard in plastic bags that use 75% less

material than jugs, but fail compared to

returnable bottles. Our readers milk the

subject to death. ::More

Tip from Planet Green: Turn Used

Milk Jugs into Window Shades

And just in case you haven't had enough

about milk today, Planet Green will show you

how to turn your used plastic milk jugs into

intriguing shades with a design that's

perfect for providing a little bit of

privacy, without blocking out all the light.

Cutting the jug's top, bottom, and handle

out with a pair of scissors leaves a flat

piece of plastic you can easily manipulate.

You're not limited to triangles, of

course-rectangles, circles, or even amorphous

shapes will make just as bold a statement.

Punch holes into the top and center-bottom of

each plastic piece, then string up your

triangles with S hooks to create a striking

window piece. . ::More on Planet
