Good place to homestead?

I'm hoping someone can tell me about a great place to " homestead " and

raise a family. We're from California, so are hoping to go no further

east than Colorado/Wyoming/Montana. We can afford $200k or less for a

home with a few acres (or more) attached. An agricultural area would

be great since my husband is a field mechanic for Caterpillar. Please

tell me about your favorite places or any good websites etc that I

could check out.

Thanks!

Erin

I know you didn't mention Texas, but it is a great choice. The cost of living is low and there is lots of property available. Check out around Conroe.

We lived in Houston for 6 years before coming to California. I really liked it, and I would move back there if we ever had the opportunity. One of my neighbors retired to Magnolia, north of Houston, towards Conroe. They love it. Texas is great, depending on the area. Californians tend to be snobbish about any place other than CA, I've found, lol. My neighbors made it clear they thought Texas inferior, lol. Even the ones who've never been there!

I'd advise visiting any area you are interested in. It's just not the same unless you see a place in person. No place will be perfect, or everyone else would be living there already, lol. Cottonmouths are a small price to pay for owning your own land, and living your dream. Snakes tend to not bother you if you don't bother them. They move off when people move in. They eat rodents, and provide an invaluable service to pest control. You just learn to live with them, and teach your kids to treat them with respect.

I've been thinking about this very subject for many years, too. I don't live living in CA, only because the price of getting our own land would be so high. But I'm pretty much stuck here, unless something drastic happens, lol, which I hope it doesn't! Any place that land is still cheap, those are the places that will probably have the tornadoes and floods you mention as a concern. I've also heard Idaho is a popular place to move right now. Lots of fertile land.

Well, let us know what places you're thinking of, and we'll share whatever we can. Good luck!

I've mentioned Texas to my husband several times, but because we live in california...there aren't a ton of people talking about it. My biggest concerns about it were the weather (we just hear about hurricanes, flooding, and tornadoes) and my husband is worried about cottonmouths. He's seen Lonesome Dove a few too many times I think lol. If you could tell me do anything for those worries I'd really appreciate it. It would help my case with Rick :)Thanks,Erin , Casa DeFeliz <casadefeliz wrote:>> I know you didn't mention Texas, but it is a great choice.
