Guest guest
This is the way my dad told me to pick his watermelons while he was on vacation this year: The curly tendril closest to the melon's stem will be completely brown. When you thump or tap the melon, it should have a hollow sound instead of a dull thud. About canteloup, I'm not sure. I know that ripe ones in the store will have a sweet smell on the stem end. I don't suppose you will want to crawl through the garden and smell each one, though, so I'm not sure how helpful that is!!
Guest guest
That's the best I could come up with too, smelling them for ripeness. We still haven't picked them, but I'm sure we look hilarious down on our hands and knees smelling our melons, lolol. Well, the neighbors think we're nuts anyway..... ;-)Cyndi In a message dated 8/27/2008 12:24:34 P.M. Guest guest
Don't worry about the neighbors. My family thinks I'm nuts. From foraging to weeding the garden, they think I'm way out there. My Mom says that she draws the line at making a salad from "weeds" in the flower garden. I'd like to think I'm just eccentric, but I think everyone knows the truth... I'm just nuts! Speaking of nuts, my neighbor lets me have all the hickory nuts from their trees. Acorns, too. It's almost that time again!!!

Guest guest
My neighbors are snobs. We're definitely "different" lol. Cyndi In a message dated 9/3/2008 5:15:26 P.M.
