Hi all.

For the first time EVER I planted some veggies in containers yesterday. I

planted a jalepeno plant, red bell peppers, green bell peppers, zucchini, and

green onions. I bought organic potting mix to plant them in, but am wondering

if I need to fertilize them or something also. Please let me know. It gets

really hot here in Nevada and I would really like to see these little guys grow!

Thank in advance.

Robyn

Hi Robyn,

Congrats! You will definitely need to give your veggies fertilizer. I use a fish emulsion/seaweed mix. If your organic potting mix is peat based, you might also want to add a little non-pelletized lime to the pots too. You might also need to provide some afternoon shade for your plants, since they will get very hot in your climate. Good luck! Please let us know how they do for you. :-)Cyndi

Hi Cyndi,

Where do you buy the fish emulsion/seaweed mix? Online or at the local

greenery?

Also, something kind of interesting. I've been listening to the audio tape,

1491, & one of the tips given to the settlers at Plymouth was to plant maize in

a mound with a fish. I read your suggestion and that was the first thing I

thought of!

:)

Our local fishmonger gave me a half a dozen fish last year that were "off" and they went right into the ground. Shrimp shells, fish fin/tail/head trimmings will occasionally get buried really deep inside the compost heap. As for the premixed fish emulsion I have found it at our local garden center and sometimes at the hardware store if they have a decent garden department. CheersBinaBarb

Hi Barb,

I found a local nursery that sells organic fertilizers. Yup, the fish and maize thing is an old native american trick. Still works for us today!
