The Simple Life A family saw a movie about global warming and decided in their little world, they would do everything they could in one year to live at peace in the world. They made a list of what they could definitely get by without. They lived near a farmer's market, so they didn't need a car. They ate food in its natural state, rarely cooking. They lived in an apartment with an elevator or stairs, they took the stairs. They rode bicycles to get to appointments. If they needed clothes, they went to the second hand shop, or put a request on Freecycle for other necessities. No cold cereal here – they ate oatmeal or cornmeal mush. They decided to go "no power", at least as much as possible. They turned off the TV and played games, invented games, read stories, and had great family times. Their electric bill went down, and their family togetherness when way up! They found out they really enjoyed being together. They even had extra time – so they volunteered together. How can your family "go green"? Brainstorm ways you might be able to save money. Do you have bicycles sitting in the garage not being used? Do you have things you can give away and do without? Maybe you can patch the play clothes, or sew a extra couple inches to the bottom of pants for kids that are shooting up like bean poles. Use your imagination! Can you eat one meal a week without cooking? Hunt for meat, which can also be a family sport and save money. Can you go one night a week without TV? Maybe you can invite another family for game night and easy cooking. Just talking with other families can get you excited. Car-pooling, canning, washing your car at home. Going to the grocery store only once a week. Finding fun, natural things to do, like hiking, picking up trash along the way! The added benefits were that both parents lost extra weight when they used to pay to use the gym. So financially, they were able to save more, as well. Now their year of "green" is over. They may not stay as low impact as they were, but they did get some great ideas. They don't want to give up their family time. They don't even miss the TV! Kids have great ideas for how to save energy. Put your heads together, and see what your family can come up with. Email me with your ideas that work – thesimple_life , so I can share them here! Pour mixture into a saucepan with the sugar and boil for 15 minutes. Will keep for several weeks in the fridge. *If a non-organic orange is used, wash peels thoroughly before peeling.
