Guest guest
Thought this was really interesting! Cyndi .... ~~~ Worm Farming Secrets - http://www.WormFarmingSecrets.com ~~~ Vol 3: Issue: 38 - Wednesday 4th November 2009 Hi Cyndi, In this issue of "Worm Farming Secrets" we have an in depth article about a company called Terracycle - specifically the question asks how this company is able to bottle and sell worm tea, when bottled worm tea has such a short shelf life as we've discussed in previous newsletters. Note that this is not an endorsement of the company itself but we do provide a brief history given that the reader asked specifically about this company. We then discuss the bottling of worm tea in more detail - overall I'm sure you'll find this article very fascinating indeed ;-0 Before we get onto that... IMPORTANT; THE SPECIAL OFFER ENDS ---> Last week, due to the missing newsletter, I made an announcement that I was offering "The Business & Biology Of Raising Earthworms" exclusive guide to worm composting for 1/3 off the regular price of $37... meaning you can get it right NOW (and over 1,000 pages of bonus composting information including all back issues of this newsletter) for ONLY $27... http://www.wormfarmingsecrets.com/worm-composting.htm Many of you took me up the offer and here's what just one of our long time readers - now brand new satisfied customer had to say... "Duncan: First I really enjoy the weekly newsletters, and although, I've been reading for quite a few months, I wrote you last week for the first time to thank you for the informative information on worm farming and how I use it in my homeschooling sessions. So I've decided to end the special THIS COMING SUNDAY - NOVEMBER 8TH - AT MIDNIGHT. So you only have until then to take full advantage... http://www.wormfarmingsecrets.com/worm-composting.htm ....please note that the sales letter at the link above will read $37 however when you click through to order via our secure payment processor the discount will already be applied. Yes, you will have immediate access to the manual and all bonus materials as soon as you have placed your order - just be sure to follow the instructions carefully. Duncan Carver Editor: "Worm Farming Secrets" admin http://www.wormfarmingsecrets.com ~|~ DID YOU KNOW? More about the coelom. The coelom contains the coelomic fluid which is a milky white liquid. This fluid is different in every species, and is also different upon the humidity of the air. Worms in dry conditions have thicker fluids then worms in wet habitats. The ceolomic fluid in Eisenia Feotidas smell like garlic! The earthworms eject this coelomic fluid through their dorsal pores around their body when they are irritated or stressed, providing a form of protection from predators. That is why you see your worms getting more slimy as you handle them! ~|~ DOWNLOAD Our 112 Page Worm Farming Success Guide Now... Terracycle is a great company based in Trenton, New Jersey, USA. The CEO Tom Szaky got the idea of staring a worm business when he was 19. He was in Princeton University when he came across some friends using worms to compost their food scraps, and using the resulting compost for their growing plants. Thinking it was a fantastic business opportunity he started to make his own worm composter to recycle the University's food scraps, and even dropped out of University to pursue this goal full time. As time went on, he saw the potential of making money from the worm tea that the composting process produces. However the selling point of his worm tea is not the tea product itself, but it's packaging. When Tom started off with selling worm tea, he had very limited funds and so had to find an economical way to package his tea. This resulted in him finding discarded empty soda bottles, cleaning them out, re-labeled and repackaged as the 'terracycle worm poop'. The product is made out of 100% garbage, from the worm tea to the packaging, which made it such an attractive product on the supermarket shelves. As the company managed to find more funds, their facilities grew larger and a professor was employed to help create correct process to create the best tea mix that can be stored for long periods of time as well as being effective. Now at 27, Tom Szaky has grew his business supplying large stores such as home depot nationwide. Terracycle has also diversified their product range by turning other rubbish into different usable products and toys. Very ethical. Here is a link to his website: http://www.terracycle.net/?wormfarmingsecrets.com Now back to your question, how does teracycle produce worm tea with long shelf-life? The answer is in its method of brewing the tea. There are many different ways of brewing worm tea, different methods for different purposes. I cannot tell you exactly how teracycle created their worm tea, but I can give you an idea of why it can be bottled, and then be used effectively in plants. The most recommended way of brewing compost / worm tea is to have the compost in a permeable bag suspended in tub of water. The water in the tub needs to be constantly oxygenated and mixed, and then a food source is added. The mixing causes the nutrients and micro-organisms to diffuse into the tub of water, while the food source encourages the microbes to grow actively and multiply quickly. When the active microbes grow quickly the problem starts as they will consume the oxygen in the tub of water very quickly. If the microbes use up all the oxygen in the water then it will go 'anaerobic'. The good bacteria will quickly die off, and the bad bacteria (which survive in non-oxygenated conditions) will start thriving. You may think 'since the bad bacteria don't use oxygen, we can wait for the oxygen levels to go back up and things will be fine again'. The problem is that once there is a chance for bad bacteria to grow these microbes will produce phytotoxins, which when they come into contact with plants, will harm them. It is almost like the tea already being poisoned. This is why the constant oxygenating of the tub of water is so important. When the tea is constantly oxygenated it provides enough oxygen as the good microbes grow, and keeps the bad microbes away. The large quantity of active microbes here is what makes this type of worm tea so good and beneficial and second of all there is a good range of different microbes including ciliates, bacteria, fungi and beneficial nematodes. The abundance and range makes the tea good for plants and trees, multiplying in soil and sticking onto leaf and plant surfaces protecting them from harmful microbes. However, the downside of the large quantity of microbes makes the tea incredibly short in shelf-life, with the simple reason that a bottled tea filled with microbes will use up the oxygen very quickly and anaerobic microbes will grow. Worm tea made with oxygenation and food source needs to be used within approximately 8 hours of being made. How does Terracycle do it? The secret is in their microbial value. Their tea will have to be very low in microbes to be able to be bottled effectively. Once bottled, because they have such low or dormant microbial activity, there is no oxygen consumption within the bottled product. At this state, the product doesn't go anaerobic, and ensuring that there are no bad microbes introduced during bottling, it can be stored for longer. It will never be as good as fresh worm tea made by the method above, but it can still benefit plants if made correctly. Terracycle do oxygenate and stir their tea periodically, however little or no food source will be added. Their aim is to allow as much microbes and nutrients to diffuse from the wormcast into the tea without the microbes being too active, and to have it oxygenated enough so that bad anaerobes will not grow and spoil the tea. However with little or no food, all microbes will die with a few going dormant. A scientific study on the teracycle worm poop has shown this to be just the case. When the product was taken out of the bottle there was little microbial activity. But when the product was mixed with some food source, microbial life slowly started replenishing. Click on the following link for the study, scroll ¾ way down for the study on teracycle... http://www.microbeorganics.com/?wormfarmingsecrets.com This shows that the teracycle worm poop doesn't only provide nutrients to plants, but when given time for the dormant microbes to redevelop when applied to soil, the product also helps with diversifying microbial life. What this product can't do is to act as a foliar spray since there will be no active microbes to stick on to leaf surfaces. In conclusion, well done to terracycle for finding the way to package their tea. It is not as good as aerated worm tea with a food source, but shelf-life does come at a cost, and in the end it does work in providing benefits to plants.
