I love Mother Earth News! I'm itching to plant my Spring Garden and it's only November. I still have some things growing out there from the fall, but pretty much winding down at this point.Kelly--- On Sun, 11/22/09, cyndikrall <cyndikrall wrote:cyndikrall <cyndikrall[RFSL] Grow $700.00 worth of food in 100 sq feetrealfoodsimplelife Date: Sunday, November 22, 2009, 1:19 AM

This is a really nice article showing how much food you can grow in a small space...

Thanks for this article. I have a very wooded lot. The small amount of sun I have is in the front yard. I just took out a boxwood hedge am planning on putting in an attractive veg. garden along my front walk. DH is dubious. If you see any good articles on that let me know. I currently have lettuce, kale spinach incorporated in my ornamental beds. Had a problem with the chard seeds. I'm near Balt so it's getting cold soon. I bought hyacinth beans never planted them. Anyone ever eaten these?

I planted all kinds of stuff recently. Not everything is coming up, so it may already be too cold. We picked the last of the tomatoes and peppers and cut down the plants. The dogs got into the bed where I planted beets and carrots, so we won't be having any of them any time soon lol. Chinese broccoli, collards, kale, chard, mustard, garlic, peas, fava beans and a few other things all coming along nicely. I'm in withdrawal over the loss of my tomato plants, lol. It feels weird not to have them around!

My green tomatoes are slowly ripening, and I'm roasting most of them for sauce as they ripen. freezer is nice and full of my sauce and my dried tomatoes. Sure feels good to know they are there lol.

I got my first new seed catalog for next year already! Pinetree arrived. So much fun starting to plan for next year already.

You mean books on planting veggies in the front yard? I know there are books out there on the subject, and i've even seen tv shows on it. I'll keep my eyes open for good articles for you.

I haven't tried hyacinth beans, but the plants are sure beautiful.

You know, there are a lot of edible flowers, like nasturtiums. If you designed a bed that included a lot of edible flowers, it would look beautiful and your husband would never notice the edibles you tuck in there too.

Are you in CA? Could not remember. I'm in SC, so we do have a longer season than up north. This is the first year I have grown stuff in the fall, and next year I am going to plant a lot more because I've had good success. Not sure when we are gonna get our first frost, but probably soon. Some people here have cold frames and garden all year round. One of my dogs loves raiding the garden too. Hubby and I are already figuring out how to re-arrange the garden to keep our dog out. The garden area is going to have to be fenced in. We have a resident turtle that raids the garden too, but he does not eat much.Kelly--- On Mon, 11/23/09, cyndikrall <cyndikrall wrote:cyndikrall <cyndikrallRe: [RFSL] Grow $700.00 worth of food in 100 sq feet Date: Monday, November 23, 2009, 12:56 AM

Yes I am in northern California. We do indeed have a long growing season, I'm very lucky. We did put up a makeshift row cover over a few tomatoes left in our backyard, as an experiment to see if we can keep the plants going for a while. It's probably still too cold to make any difference lol. We have the raised beds in the backyard fenced in to keep our dogs out. It's the garden out at the farm that gets the owners dogs running thru it that has all the problems. We put up a temporary fence there after the last incident. It probably doesnt keep out the deer, but at least the dogs cant run thru and dig in the beds.

Thats great that you have a visiting turtle! I put one in the pond that the neighbors found in their driveway, but he didnt stick around. :-(
