Guest guest
Dear Heather, Namaste. Thank you for your email. Medical Background: 1. Skin Scar - A scar is a natural part of the natural healing process. Skin scars occur when the deep, thick layer of skin (the dermis) is damaged. To mend the damage, the body has to lay down new collagen fibres (a naturally occuring protein which is produced by the body). This process results in a scar. Because the body cannot re-build the tissue exactly as it was, the new scar tissue will have a different texture and quality to the suurounding normal tissue tissue. An injury does not become a scar until the wound has completely healed. Most skin scars are of the flat and pale variety, which leave a trace of the original injury which caused them. Sometimes the body can over-produce collagen, which results in a scar which is raised above the surrounding skin, these are known as either Hypertrophic scars or Keloid scars. Hypertrophic scars take the form of a red raised lump on the skin, but do not grow beyond the boundaries of the original wound, and they often improve in appearance after a few years. Keloid scars are a more serious form of scarring, because they can carry on growing indefinitely into a tumorous growth. These are caused when the body doesn't know when to stop producing collagen. Both hypertrophic and keloid scars are more common on younger and dark skinned people. They can occur on anyone, but some people have a genetic succeptibility to these types of scarring. They can be caused by surgery, an accident, or sometimes by acne. Altenately, a scar can take the form of a sunken recess in the skin, which has a pitted appearance. These are caused when underlying structures supporting the skin, such as fat or muscle are lost. This type of scarring is commonly associated with acne, but can be caused by chickenpox, surgery or an accident. Scars can also take the form of stretched skin. These are caused when the skin is stretched rapidly (for instance during pregnancy, or adolescent growth spurts), or when skin is put under tension during the healing process, (usually near joints). This type of scar usually improves in appearance after a few years. 2. Broken veins on face, bulging leg veins - Benign vascular lesions are overgrown enlarged blood vessels or multiple small vessels. Vascular lesions such as telangiectasias or spider veins, port wine stain birthmarks, and strawberry hemangiomas are made up of abnormal blood vessels in the skin. They all vary in severity for example, telangiectasias, or broken blood vessels, usually involve single vessels and are often harmless. There are two main types of Red veins or hemangiomas: spider angiomas (nevus araneus), commonly known as spider veins, and cherry angiomas (senile angiomas or Campbell de Morgan spots). Spider angiomas are found around the eyes, nose, cheekbones, arms, and legs. They are red marks formed from dilated blood vessels. There are various causes, although most often they are due to an inherited factor or from sun damage. They occur during pregnancy in 70% of white women and 10% of black women, in alcoholics and liver disease patients, and in 50% of children. Spider angiomas are painless, reddish blue marks formed from blood-filled capillaries, around a small artery, in the shape of a spider web. The walls of the veins which carry blood from the feet and hands back to the heart, sometimes weaken with age. If the veins' walls and valves are weak, the blood may tend to balloon out against the skin. Cherry angiomas are dilated capillaries found mainly on the trunk, they appear in the 30s and multiply with aging. Port wine stains, on the other hand, tend to grow with the patient, usually infants, darken in color and will never go away if left untreated. Hemangiomas grow very rapidly after birth but often go away with time. Some, however may impair vision or breathing and should be treated before they are allowed to advance to this stage. 3. UNDER EYE BAGS, Dark Circles around eyes- Bags under the eyes, formed of fatty tissue and fluid, form early in some families. Shadows from overhead lighting may cause the appearance of circles, or thin skin on the lower eyelid may let the dark-red or purple inside of the lid show through. If fluid is retained in the body, the bags can get even bigger. Some conditions that cause fluid retention include heart, thyroid, kidney and liver problems, high blood pressure and premenstrual bloating. Some medications can also cause fluid problems. Many factors contribute to the appearance of dark circles under the eyes. These include; food allergies, particularly dairy products, kidney disorders, cardiovascular insufficiencies, toxicity and aging. Aging factors relate to genetic inheritance. In some people, one aspect of aging is significant thinning of skin around the eyes and loss of " fat padding " in the face, both of which can result in dark circles.
