Hi all -

I am about to embark on what I feel may be the journey of my life.

(from what I've read at least!) I have a feeling to start working with

black obsidian and I have a lovely little stone that I've started to

use and I'm almost positive that it is obsidian but I just want to be

sure. Is obsidian translucent when help up to the light? The stone I

have isn't. If it's supposed to be then I guess this in onyx, which is

still good, but, I really want obsidian lol! Oh and of course, I'm a

Scorpio. Heehee, this should be lots of fun.

Meanwhile, does anyone else have any obsidian insights or experiences

you would like to share?

Jean,

I just purchased two obsidian spheres. One was a rainbow obsidian and the other

a black. I have not messed around with them yet, but I too read about black

obsidian and HAD to have some much like you.

So, I will be anxious to hear the responses that come from the group on black

obsidian.

rlrap

PS. I have ordered some tumbled stones in onxy, jet, black obsidian, and black

tourmaline that are labeled so I may learn how to tell them apart.

Hi,

I personally like black obsidian for soul retrieval work. In old Turkey it was

used to make mirrors and is good for reflective work, unraverling emotional

chaos and observing our dark side to re-pattern ourselves. Let Obsidian

retrieve the parts of our soul that disconnect from prior trauma.....this life

our past. I have noted many artists attracted to this stone. It is a silica

rich glossy volcanic rock with traces of sulphur. This represents the

penetration of deeper tissues and clearing of stored toxins......no wonder it is

good for retrieving the past.

Cheers,

Thanks for your response rlrap! I just finished going through the

crystal questionnaire, which I think is in the Files section, from

Beyond the Rainbow. It really opened my eyes to some other areas in

my life that can use working on and so my list has now expanded. I'm

also looking at black tourmaline; clear, green and honey calcite; and

perhaps some amber. I currently have in my stash a beautiful rose

quartz wand, a really nice clear quartz lazer cut obelisk, a nice

piece of tumbled moonstone, some citrine; a piece of amethyst; one

large flourite octahedron - I could have sworn I had more of those; a

small lapis heart and a herkimer diamond. I used to have lots more

but I gave away really more than I should have when I moved a few

years ago. I was driving and it was all just so heavy! :-/ Anyway,

it just makes room for some new friends to step in and hang out

with. I could also probably use some green aventurine, I've always

liked that one too. I wish I had a shop close by that had a more

complete selection, I prefer seeing and handling the stones before

buying them. There is just one metaphysical shop in the area which

is about 30 to 40 minutes away and it's not alot more than tumbled

pieces or else jewelry. I lived in Tempe, AZ for a while and there

used to be a fully dedicated crystal shop there downtown, it was

simply divine! I got a lovely small quartz cluster there which I

still have, but unfoturnately I discovered it just as the owner was

closing down to go into semi-retirement selling from her new home

about an hour away. That was the only place like that I'd ever been

in, not just selling specimens, but a truly spiritually based vibe.

Anyway, guess it's time for me to get back to my studying!

TTFN,

Jean - PS, who did you order your stones from? Is this a regular

source for you?

PS - I don't know if you've read Katrina Raphaell's writing on

obsidian, she says in her experience the sphere are best covered when

not being worked with.

Hello Dawn :)

Thanks for your input. Do you have any specific exercises for

working with obsidian that you can recommend?

I do not cover my obsidian sphere, I have a black Rainbow Obsidian

sphere about the size of a bowling ball which does not like to be

covered. This sphere has been present without cover in my house for

over a decade and in the home of its previous keeper for longer than

that. It has worked with hundreds, possibly thousands of people and

not one person has experienced anything that is damaging or

overwhelming. Some have experienced a sudden awareness of personal

unrecognized issues but not unkindly. Little children love this

obsidian sphere. The only people who have ever started to have any kind

of " heavy " experience with black Obsidian were those who had been

impressed enough by Ms.Raphaell's book to be convinced that they were

supposed to have such an experience and were always reacting to the

fear generated by the warning rather than the energy or effect of the

obsidian.

My oldest daughter has worked with another Obsidian sphere She has

found obsidian is a great companion and comfort for people and groups

with deep healing needs those who have been abused , molested are in

recovery or have dealt extensively with violent death etc.

Yes Obsidian can be a straight forward revealer but K R seems to have

fear based attitudes around obsidian or perhaps its a power thing .

She may still be coming from a more object oriented mind set rather

than trusting the Deva spirit of the stone in this case . Yes,

Obsidian can be a powerful transformer awakener , protector, As a

revealer of the shadow however It does not run around mentally whacking

innocents and has support for for everyone not just adepts. I admit

that it has been a long time since I've read KR and her books have not

been among those that I feel called to refer to very often. usually

when I consult them it is in response to a question that already refers

to her books rather than the " call " to a resource.

I grew up essentially surrounded by obsidian, we would find it in our

yard and it was common throughout our area. My brother used to bring

home arrowheads from a nearby hill. Not all obsidian is translucent

some is quite opaque.

On a personal note ... I take this view for any *full time* scrying tool be

it a sphere, crystal, mirror that a person uses solely for (perhaps dedicated)

scrying purposes. I have a black scrying mirror that is kept covered unless in

use or being moved to a new location (to ensure no breakage occurs)

Blessings to your eve.

Hey Peggy -

Thanks so much for your comments, they really help. I can definitely

see where you are coming from in your insight to obsidian's energy.

In fact, in browsing through several online shops looking at obsidian

I noticed that when I came across a heart shaped piece and actual

natural pieces from Mexico with heart shaped white banding in them(!)

it felt as if the stone was actually trying to say, hey, I'm not that

terrifying to work with, I'm just wanting to help you, please don't

be afraid of me, my enery is coming from love not from fear. I mean,

I really could not believe that, naturally occuring heart-shaped

bands! Definitely evidence of a higher intelligence at work!

Obsidian must be launching a new PR campagin!

But my goodness, the size of a bowling ball!?! I'm sure that

specimen has quite a presence in your home. How intriguing. I am

looking forward to experiencing obsidian's energy in my life and feel

that perhaps part of it's lesson for me will be to stop assuming

these inner journeys as needing to be heavy and fearful, thus

allowing myself to attend to whatever I need to with much more ease

and peace.
