Guest guest
Dioptase Dioptase is a beautiful green crystal that is often compared to Emerald. It is softer and more brittle than emeralds are and is therefore not used in jewelry very often. it is a minor source of Copper and is a treasured mineral specimen among collectors but does not have commercial uses. I have two small clusters of Dioptase one is from Namibia and the other from Russia although I no longer recall which is which because I failed to keep written records and my memory is not as good as I thought. This is one of my most favorite crystals. Dioptase has been known since before minerals began to be formally cataloged in 1797 but has only recently attracted much notice and come to the fore in crystal healing work . It is now known as a very Powerful " New Age " crystal.( Diane Stein and Melody) Dioptase is rather a rare mineral s consisting of acid copper orthosilicate, H2CuSiO4 crystallizes in the parallel-faced herniahedral class of the rhombohedral system " PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS: * Color is deep green. * Luster is vitreous. * Transparency crystals are transparent to translucent. * Crystal System is trigonal; bar 3 (Dioptase is one of the few rhombic silicates). * Crystal Habits include stubby crystals that are usually well formed prisms topped with the three faces of a rhombohedon. Prisms are six sided and usually not very long. Simple rhombohedrons are also common. * Cleavage is perfect in three directions forming rhombohedrons. * Fracture is conchoidal and brittle. * Hardness is 5 (harder than other green copper minerals). " excerpt from (http://www.galleries.com/minerals/silicate/dioptase/dioptase.htm) It seems to be found mostly in small clusters. I was unable to locate details of current mining operations for Dioptase. Dioptase is found in rather more places than I'd thought. The current main sources of Dioptase seem to be Namibia and Russia but it is also found in Morocco , the Congo , Zaire, Chile, Argentina, Mexico and several US states including New Mexico, Arizona and California.
