Hi all,

I've been a member of this group for a long time, but my interest waned

in the past. I discovered a box of crystals while cleaning out a room

this week. My father was into lapidary and polished stones and made

bola ties and pendants. I found a large (4 " x 6 " ) block of rose quartz

and another larger block about the same size of a black substance with

white marbled throughout. I doubt it's onyx, but could be wrong. Any

ideas and is there a website or book that I could look at pictures of

cyrstals and stones to familiarize myself with the stones? I have the

huge book on properties, but it doesn't have any pictures. Thanks.

Thanks - just looked that up and it has white dots on it, mine has

white lines through out - like marbled meat.

Not sure if it is ok to post these links or not since they are both

commercial sites, but they are a wealth of info for looking.

I can't recommend any books with photos unless it would be the

National Audubon Society Field Guide to Rocks and Minerals. No book,

even this one, is going to be comprehensive. (There is a rock called

chlorastrolite that may fit your description on page 534. It is black

with spider webbing or marbling in it.) There are just too many

different minerals out there. Checking some books out from the library

would be my best advise on that one.

Good luck, I know how frustrating it can be trying to find a specific

stone. There are so many places that are mined out and so many things

are specific to only one small location that there are a very limited

number of specimens.

Zebra stone was the first thing that came to my mind. Take a look at this

picture and see what you think.

Hi,

I finally took it completely out of the box and turned it over and lo

and behold it is snowflake obsidian. Now to study the properties and

use it to its full potential. Thanks all.
