Seeking help for my father

My dad is going through major health issues, and it's been tough to find

anything that works.

Dad had heart surgery about five years ago, and it really was hard on his body,

mind, and spirit. He's now having extreme joint pain, as well as difficulties

with cognition. Homeopathy was of little help, and the practitioners I've spoken

to said that it's a real " catch 22 " to work with him because some of the

medications he takes are ones he needs, but they're also part of the problem.

Herbs and vitamin supplements have proven problematic because they can change

his blood consistency, leaving him prone to bleeding.

I'm putting this out here with the hope that the members will be open to

brainstorming about this rather difficult case.

Thanks.

My problem right now is that I don't even have viable options to test for. Dad's

decline has been so sharp and so complicated that I just don't know where to go

or what therapies to consider. Homeopathy failed, and the practitioner said that

she's convinced my father is toxic, but she doesn't know what to do for him. If

anyone can help me piece this together, I'll appreciate the help.

Aloha Tom. . . again your lovingness and care come through so I will share from

the heart some of my own experiences.  I don't want to say things in a way that

cause emotional upset, but know from experience that there comes a time when the

physical body is unable and or unwilling to return to a state of viable health.

I've been a part of the process of many transitions as a home health and hospice

aid.  It is a hard reality, but once accepted the time remaining shared can

become enormously healing for all parties involved.

Ask your father how he sees his ability and desire for recovery.  It's important

to  share these feeling  before his ability to do that changes if

possible.  This often happens sooner than expected so find the heart to do this

as soon as able to.  Ask him how he would like to spend that time, how he would

like you to help or if there is anything he would like to share.   I've seen

some of the most miraculous healings between parents and children and husbands

and wives happen when that opportunity is offered.  A lifetime of toughness or

seeming lack of acknowledgment of past 'issues' can melt away in minutes.  Those

passing usually know and accept what is coming, it's those of us remaining  who

have a difficult time.

If it seems that healing the body is not going to happen use the time to share

what you would like to or need to share. Look at old photo albums, read to him

from books that he enjoys.  Ask his doctors if they think hospice aide would be

helpful.  It's a free service and support is tremendous beyond what can be

understood until you've been blessed with their support. Working  with those

knowledgeable about palliative care and minimizing pain if possible can allow

you to know that you did everything possible. Doing this doesn't mean things

won't improve, it just means that you haven't missed an opportunity the you

might have otherwise.

If there are family members estranged take the leadership role and encourage

using the opportunity to do the same. Sometimes those in your fathers position

are willing to talk about spiritually when they had spent a lifetime dismissing

its importance.  Transition can be looked at as a loss or as an opportunity.

When my own father passed it was very sudden.   The physical distance was great

but when he was released from an unhappy life that I could not change I felt a

sense of relief for him.  This made me uncomfortable until brothers and sisters

shared the same sentiment.

If need, give him permission to go knowing in your heart that you've done all

that you could to support his physical, emotional and spiritual needs while

allow him to be in charge of a process that we will all face sooner or later.

Stay connected to your own sources of comfort, friends that you care cry, laugh

and share with.  Dr Phil has a saying that has helped me through some difficult

times that goes 'it's not time that heals all wounds, it's what you do with the

time that is healing'.

The above may be a lot to absorb.  In this culture we are so hidden from some

realities that it seems impossible to allow them to happen without difficulty.

The closeness you feel to your father will not end, regardless of from where and

how he sends his love to you and you to him.  Knowing  that may allow you

both to grow and heal from the process.  I could share many stories about what I

have been privileged enough to witness, but story that matters most right now if

one you are living out.  All here are sending love.  Blessed be!

Tom,

I can empathize and completely understand what you are going through. I am a

caregiver for my 86 yr. old mother who has the whole list of old age issues

(diabetic, heart disease, dimentia, arthritis, etc.). Like you, I also have to

be careful of what I give her since she is also on blood thinners (coumadin and

plavix).

Not sure of what you have tried already, but I have had some success with

various supplements. My mom's heart condition has been doing very well the last

few years and her diabetes has been well controlled. The issues I am trying to

tackle right now are her dimentia, arthritis, and various pain issues (primarily

due to her catheter right now).

For the heart issues, you may want to check into something called hawthorn

berries. I have been giving my mom this for years and do not believe there is

any interaction with blood levels. I also give her fish oil daily (initially

against the wishes of the doctors). My reasoning was that the health/heart

benefits outweighed the risk of blood thinning (fish oil can thin the blood) and

also the fact that she gets her blood levels checked regularly. After I had

started this, the doctors recommended that I start giving it to her.

For the brain/cognition issues, I am currently giving my mom phosphatidylserine

(I think that is the name) which is supposed to help. I also just started a

supplement called vinpocetine. It is hard to judge the success of these since

there is no good test if this is helping. It may not be reversing things but

may just be slowing the progression down.

Best of luck to you and your dad and feel free to contact me if I can be of any

further help.

Ken

Hello Tom,

Naturopath Angela responding to your post. May I suggest finding a Naturopathic

Doctor/Physician. This is someone who has allopathic medical training as well as

holistic. This person will be familiar with the medications your Father is

taking and understand how to balance the proper herbs/supplements with the meds

he's on. My feeling is you really need an integrative doctor. One or the other

with not suffice unless they work together as a team. Be wise in your selection

when finding a N.D. - some traditional naturopaths label themselves as " doctors "

when that is false & misleading. In this country you are not allowed to use the

term " Doctor " unless you've gone to medical school - right or wrong as that may

seem.

Good Health & Reiki Wishes,
